avast update changed my admin system password!

just updated avast, which was a pain cause somehow it changed my vista system admin password. and now i can’t login to admin account on this computer. I had to login using an old user acct i set up for my mother, and now i can’t update anything else, cause i need the admin password that i now don’t have, cause avast changed it.

-i do not have a password reset disk
-now no access to any admin features
-do not have windows disk(s)
-system restore needs admin password
-free password cracker from a friend didn’t work

anyone able to help, with any ideas would be appreciated…

Love It!
LOL LOL LOL
I nominate the above post for the “best post of the year”

@lincabe,
You stated it as a fact. Obviously you do have evidence that Avast did it. Could you share it please?

how do i post the proof?

Depends what it is. Under the reply text box is Attachements and other options, try that.

  1. what previous AV product you used? Did you do a clean uninstalling from the manufacturer’s website?
  2. what other security products you have currently installed?
  3. did you reboot your computer recently?
  4. did you scan your computer recently, if yes, with what, what were the results?
  5. when did you last install Avast? what version? free? paid? suite?
  6. What are the most common sites you visit?
  7. which is the current update you speak of?
  8. what rules do you have in the vista built-in firewall?
  9. do you have a secured router?

Did you use NTPASSWORD? http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/

Should be able to reset your administrative password with this tool.

Whilst cooby’s post is rubbing salt in the wound, I in over eight and a half years of using avast and spent much time as a regular on these forums I have never had this happen to me or heard of it.

Avast has no functionality to change passwords even if you actually wanted it to do that.

So I believe this to have been an unfortunate coincidence.
If you have another account that has admin privileges you should be able to run system restore from that and you may also be able to change the password from that account or possibly create a password reset disk.

Not necessary to thank me, as many of us are here to help users like you, and together we will find or point you or someone else, to a viable and correct solution for any issues that may come up now or in the future.

Be sure to tell your friend about this tool. Very useful when it is needed. Now, you can create that password reset disk if you need to.

About the password reset: Are you now good to go? Or do you have any other issues?
