Hi all, sometime last year or maybe even before, Avast changed the way it works with updates.
Earlier there was one windows executable that did everything, but now there are at least two randomly named ones that do check or update or whatever, everytime update timer hits.
It’s triggering my outgoing firewall like crazy and is making me crazy as well - the only way to make it work is to constantly allow traffic form new programs (as the firewall sees them), or let all traffic pass through.
The firewall in question is ‘windows 10 firewall control’, a small but really perfect firewall that can control in and out traffic, unlike firewall that comes with Avast (which is dumb as hell).
And I suspect that any decent windows firewall would behave the same way, so is there a way to fix Avast to not download/generate random exe files for every single update?
Or something else?
Avast changed its updater to newer one named “icarus” a few years ago, that runs from different path everytime. Old installations may still use older updater “instup”, which runs from some fixed pathes, eventually switches to icarus.
Icarus is designed to work that way; I don’t think there will be “fix” soon as there was long discussions about that which achieves no changes. Some firewalls support wildcards for their rules and if so it’ll work along.
In some environment icarus runs from maybe fixed path that solves above issue, but I’m not sure how these difference arises.
I use Malwarebytes Windows Firewall Control which has never had a problem with Icarus before. Now Avast won’t update its definitions or the Program. I just constantly get dozens of requests through the Firewall which I click on accept as fast as I can but it always fails.
First, I’m an Avast user and not an Avast Team member.

Have you still got the Avast Firewall component installed ?
If so there could be a possibility that there is conflict between the two,
