also cant dowload update…cannot connecet to server…help pls…
Make sure into the firewall settings the following programs are allowed to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner) (allow server rights)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service) (allow email rights)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable)

I am having same problem. I am using Windows Firewall and insured that the required exceptions were made and I have even turned the thing off. I am using broadband and belkin wireless router. The laptop uses the wireless connection and there is no problem. My wired desktop has the problem. Tried the notepad insertions for alwayson and this too was to no avail. I am running XP Home Ed and I have no other anti virus, adware, malwhere or other programs. Same thing happened with Netscape 8. I am running IE and NS7.2 just fine.
Any ideas??? ???
I had a similar problem, automatic updates worked though, does yours?
I do not have Avast.setup
So can’t tell ZA to permit it to connect.
Just updated to Avast! Free version 4.6.691 today.
This is the first trouble I have had since starting to use Avast! about 9 months ago.
Where did “Avast.setup” go? How can I get it back so i can update ?

avast.setup is a temporary file created by tranformation of setup.ovr file into the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Data\Setup folder.
So, you must allow, C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Data\Setup\avast.setup to connect. If it is not blocked by the firewall, as soon as you invoke the update, the pop-up window will ask for permission.
