AVAST wants a password after program update

AVAST wants a password now, after a program update to 6.0.1091.0 yesterday.

I have no passwords on the DELL laptop 1.73 GHz running Windows XP.
I am unable to uninstall or change the AVAST settings without a password.

Avast does not require a password unless you have ticked the option.

Download the Avast-removal tool by clicking on blue “Clear” in my signature.
Boot in safe mode.
Run the downloaded tool to remove Avast.

Reboot and check.

Download Avast free by clicking on blue “Free” in my signature and install.

uninstall/re-install Avast, no other way out :slight_smile:

Yes, AVAST is asking for a password.

No, I did not tick the option, before, or after program update.

Where do I get the password to uninstall it?

@Zyndstoff (aka Steven Gail)
Thanks, you provided the information I needed to get past the password problem.

No password needed with uninstall tool in safe mode.

Again: Avast does not by itself use the password option. It is user’s decision / action required.

Thanks, Zyndstoff (aka Steven Gail).

Check your link. I Googled “Download the Avast-removal tool” to get

http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe

This time it was not the user’s decision / no action was required. I only clicked
upgrade program. After the requested reboot there was a dialog box asking for a
password to make any changes, a box I had never dealt with before.

?
The link is perfect.
Exactly what you have googled… What’s the problem?

Avast will not impose a password protection unless a user sets the option and defines the password. That’s a fact. User action is required. Maybe someone else did enable that option on your PC without you knowing it?

@Zyndstoff (aka Steven Gail)

You wrote, Download Avast free by clicking on blue “Free” in my signature and install.
The blue “Free” links to:
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe

What you meant, was for me to click on the blue “Clear” to get:
http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe

?
The link is perfect.

I misread your links.
To err is human, but it’s not mandatory.

Obsolete fact:

That is what I wrote: click on the blue “Clear” in my signature to download removal tool:

What you have quoted was the second part of that post.

Anyway, since you seem to know everything much better as I do, I wish you good luck and end any support right here.

Thank you.

Was my great pleasure. ::slight_smile:

Sounds like someone imputed one of the OP’s computers for a Password without his knowledge or consent. I hope things are OK now.

I just had the same problem with a customer. She had installed a Free Version, but couldn’t enter it due to password protection. So I just booted the PC into Safe Mode (with Remote Control), turned off the password function in the Free version. Then deleted the Free version with the uninstall tool. Booted back to normal mode and installed the Internet Security version. Then after rebooting for the AIS install I try to check the license information and then the password protection screen comes up again. On a clean install! That isn’t right…

Ughhhh! Something is wrong than,

One of the techs may come in and request some specific information about the computer/network/OS causing the issues, as well as the specific Avast product and version. If no one has checked the “use a password box,” and Avast is prompting for a password after a clean install, that is not right.

Is this customer on a network? If she is, has she talked to her network administrator or head person of that particular department? If it is part of a business network, I wonder if their firewall, all computers on the network are being blocked from adding additional installations? At several colleges that I went to and had computer training, they would lock down student installs to prevent abuses of the system.

Let’s see what other information that Avast support people may have to say that could help you in this matter.

It was a home user (old lady) which had a fairly new laptop with Windows 7 on it.

Sigh, I reinstalled it like 4 or 5 times now. Even with the new 6.0.1119 version. I also deleted everything related to avast with regedit in the safe mode. Again, avast asks for a password after a clean install of Internet Security. When I went back to safe mode after the clean install I could access the avast settings but could not change anything (like it was corrupted and you can’t turn off the self defense). I tried to turn off the password protection in the safe but it would not let me.

The reseller support could not help me so far, so if anyone knows an anwser, it would be nice.

This could be malware related, maybe.

Yes it happen to me, I never had to password protect my Avast, but after the upgrade program from 5.xxx version (i forgot) to version 6.0.1203 suddenly this ‘very very amazing desktop security tool’ asked me to enter a password. Anyway thanks for the ‘removal tool’. I would reinstall AVAST.
