Avast Web Scanner Not Functioning

Running Avast 4.8 Home. Have never been able to get the resident webscanner (WebShield)to function. It does not scan anything even though ashWebsv.exe and rpcss.exe
are activated and web access properly granted in my firewall. I have reinstalled the entire product and still no function in the webscanner. The StandardShield
works properly. The problem is only with the WebShield. Can someone HELP?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

Have you had any other A/V products installed on this system before you installed Avast? Or, do you still have any installed on the system?

Sometimes when you remove Norton, AVG, McAfee, etc… they don’t completely uninstall. Remnants of them will still be present on the system, and can cause conflicts.

You’ll likely need to use a removal tool to remove the rest of the old A/V, then avast should work properly.

What is your Operating System ?
What is your browser are you using ?

  • What is your firewall ?
Does it allow ashWebSv.exe internet access ?
  • If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update and reconnect to the internet, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

Have you tried running it as Administrator ?
Are you logged in with User Access Control turned on or off ?

{I am assuming Windoze Vista}

Thank you for the replies…so quickly.

I have no other A/V products installed currently and have not had any other products except Avast in the past.
System is: Windows ME( yes, I know its Jurassic but it still works- for now)
Firefox Browser.
ZoneAlarm Free
I have already verified the firewall permissions and they are fine.
Win ME does not require administrator logon.

any other ideas?(besides upgrading from winme)

The web shield doesn’t work transparently with winME so that is no doubt your problem.

You have to manually set your browser/s to use the web shield proxy:
For IE - broadband users: - Tutorial - Web Shield Proxy Set-up for IE
For IE - dialup users - Tutorial - Web Shield Proxy Set-up for IE (Dial-up)
For Firefox users - Tutorial - Web Shield Proxy Set-up for Firefox

This information is also in the avast help file, Resident Protection, Web Shield section.

Thank You DAVIDR!
Worked like a charm!
