avast! Web Shield working overtime, Can not run Malwarebytes

I appreciate any help that I receive in dealing with my issue.

This afternoon while using my laptop, it restarted out of nowhere and when it finished rebooting avast! Web Shield started to block many harmful webpages. My intention was to follow the steps outlined here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0. I downloaded Malwarebytes, had just finished the scan, and found one Trojan that was to be quarantined. Before I could hit “apply” though my dogs went wild over the FedEx guy, I put my laptop down and the screen completely fritzed out. I had to reboot again because my trackpad was not responding. When I finished my reboot, Malwarebbytes no longer runs. I open it, I see the mbam.exe process start, then the process is ended. I tried to rename the application, but the same thing occurs with the renamed file. Any suggestions?

Continue with OTL and aswMBR …and attach the logs http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

Done and done. The three logs are attached. After the OTL scan I realized that my setting for the Extra Registry portion was “Use SafeList” and not “none” as indicated in the screenshot. Do I need to rescan with OTL or no?

Malware experts are notified and will asdist you when online

Thank you Pondus.

Hi there, I believe I know the culprit. This will take at least two further posts to clear if my suspicions are correct

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
[*]Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

THEN

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
[*]Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

essexboy, I’ve followed your instructions up to the download and install Combofix step. The OTL log from the Quick Scan is attached. Please let me know if I should proceed with the next steps.

Continue with Combofix instructions…

Essexboy will be back online tomorrow

Finished running Combofix. After the log was created I re-enabled avast! to report on how computer is running currently and Web Shield was blocking harmful webpages again. I rebooted and didn’t have any issues for about 10 minutes before the web shield began blocking sites. Still seem to have the same problem occurring. The ComboFix.txt log is attached.

Edit: Not sure if this means anything, but I can use tabbed browsing in Chrome, but not in IE. In IE I can open a new tab, but can not load any websites in that second tab. Something strange that I noticed, but not sure if it is pertinent to my issue.

If Malwarebytes is not running, and it detected the Trojan, I suggest you use this: https://www.malwarebytes.org/chameleon/
It is designed to get Malwarebytes running when it is blocked. If possible, find the file that Malwarebytes is detecting at report it to avast!.
If Malwarebytes fails, I suggest using this https://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/eek/
Best of luck

EDIT: Essexboy is right. The file is patched and you should not use MBAM to fix it, because it could result in a non-booting system

Do not use MBAM to clear the rpcss problem, you may end up with a non booting system.

I am preparing the fix now be patient

OK after the fix has run and the computer has rebooted I would like you to zip the following folders C:\Qoobox and C:_OTL
Could you then upload the zipped folder to a file sharing site for me to collect

After this run the alerts will cease

  1. Close any open browsers.

  2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

FCopy:: c:\windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-com-base-qfe-rpcss_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_c7f0e16b547f887d\rpcss.dll|c:\windows\system32\rpcss.dll

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

I was unable to create the zip file for either folder until I turned off the “read only” attribute. I was successful in doing so for the C:\Qoobox, but am not able to turn off that attribute for the C:_OTL folder. It says that I need to provide administrator permission, but I am unsure how to do that (I usually right click on a program and run as administrator, but am not sure how to do that with the attributes.) There is only the single user profile on this computer, I don’t see a separate one labeled administrator.

No problem Qoobox will do as that has the main file

Have the alerts now ceased ?

I ran the script with Combofix. After it completed I re-enabled avast! Opened browser, and tried to access this site (and google). No web pages are loading. Avast is still blocking malicious sites even though I don’t see it or my other regular programs in system tray in lower right corner. I do see it in processes tab in Windows Task Manager. In lower corner I only see a flag that says “Solve PC issues: 2 messages” when I hover. Posting from a tablet now.

Edit: should I have rebooted? I have not yet since running Combofix

Yes reboot as combofix needs to do that to replace the file

Web access is back. I have not received a notification from web shield yet. It seems like the problem is cleared.

Here is an upload of the Qoobox.zip file: http://sharesend.com/xamh00kb

Combofix should have generated a log on reboot could you post that please. Also how is the computer behaving now ?

Also could you redo Qoobox please as it had not at that stage quarantined the file. It should be there now

New Qoobox.zip is located here: http://sharesend.com/imyesf3z

The Combofix log file is attached.

I have not received any webshield alerts. My Chrome and IE browsers are both working fine.

Edit: both browsers are now working fine.
