Avast WebShield updates

Hello,

A short question:

Do I need to update the program or do i need to update the virusdatabase, to be fully protected against the latest pests with Avast WEBSHIELD?
Ive got the program update on manually configured, and virus updates on automatic… Am I still well-protected against new pests now?

The question is a result of the chosen name “virus database update”, since the webshield is blocking sites with spyware and no virusses.

I cant imagine that the spyware updates are installed together with the program, but this is just to be sure…

Web Shield is the same as Standard Shield, just designed to scan HTTP webpages not local files. It’s defense mechanisms are updated via standard VPS and extra functionality via program updates.

In fact, it’s the contrary. avast is an antivirus and can scan some spywares too.
But, it’s better if you use a dedicated program for spywares: Ad-aware, SpyBot, Ewido (antitrojan too).

Hi,

O k I understand Avast detects some pests also beside virusses.
Ive just ordered pestpatrol, hope this is a good program beside avast!.

Sure?
I think PestPatrol is one of the most poor configurable antispyware. Too many false positives too.
In my opinion there are, at least, five or six better antispywares :stuck_out_tongue:

The positive thing about pestpatrol is that it catches a lot, even when I scrap the false alarms, its still finding real pests after an adaware or avast scan finished…
The false alarms are always quite the same, its catching keygens and programs like kazaa and grokster…

most interesting was that even after a Hitman Pro scan (which is running adaware, spybot and spysweeper) it did found some real pests that were slowing down my internet explorer.

However this was done with pestpatrol 4, i need to try 5 still that seems to have more configurable options and will do much more automaticly.

So my opinion is that the advantages overrule the disadvantages :stuck_out_tongue:

However I will take a look at programs like search&destroy and spysweeper

Can you send the samples to virus@avast.com ?
You can zip and password the files… Inform a link to this thread and the password used.
You can send the files to Chest and, from there, resend to Alwil for analysis.
Thanks. This could improve avast detection… although I’m not sure they’re real viruses and not false positives ;D

Hello, Sure I will send the files to virus@avast.com. I really think they are real spyware since my explorer was slowing down for 30-50% and after removing all was running smooth again. I will catch up again the .log file and will get the files from my quarantine … (if its still there hope so)
