avast! will not be able to protect news(NNTP) protocol error 10049

Hello all, I’m new to this board. Hope somebody can help.

My friend (not computer literate) received the subject line message this morning. I checked existing posts but didn’t find this exact message.

The computer is a Pentium II - 366 Mhz running Windows 2000 Professional. Free Comodo firewall is active.

My computer is a Pentium IV running Windows XP. I never received this message.

Any thoughts on what this is about?

Thanks, Utah2004

This (almost always) means that something is preventing avast from setting the intercepts it needs for email and NNTP scanning. In most cases this is because a previous anti-virus product has not been properly removed and is still active in the system.

Is this a new installation of avast? If so, what was the previous program and how was it removed?

There is a chance that Comodo is blocking that request without asking the user…
Sometimes, removing the ashMaiSv.exe (avast mail provider) and the email program (and spam killer application, if any) from the allowed programs at Comodo and then trying to download emails again could make it work (of course, allow connection when Comodo asks for).

Thanks for the tips “alanrf” and “tech”. I’ll see if any of these things could be the cause of the problem.
