Avast will not finish scan(same as multiple virus)

To All, I have assisted a relative in downloading Avast and after a successful download has now found that 30 or more viruses are on the computer! The problem is that the virus scan has never finished completely without hanging up or locking up the computer. Approx 30 viruses were ID’d and moved to the chest. A few were able to be deleted, but after restarts(from be locked up) they come back, I suppose because of the location they are in. The errors that occur state: “not enough free memory” or “rpc server is unavailable”. I do not know if the files found that have put in the chest should be deleted or restored individually if even possible. I had her start the computer in Safe mode to try and get it to finish the scan completely but that did not work. Can someone suggest a plain “to the point” strategy to take? Basic info on the computer: Running Win 98 SE, 192mb ram, system resources free 86 to 92 percent.

Welcome getridofit,

Try this:

Press alt + ctrl + del and ‘End task’ everything apart from ‘systray’ and ‘Explorer’, after this, open avast and retry the scan.

BTW, there was no need to create two identical posts, it can cause confusion ;), no real harm done though
