Avast, Windows 8.1, and Widi

I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 and a Netgear PTV3000 WIDI receiver. I am able to connect to the WIDI receiver fine if I do not have Avast installed on my tablet.

However, if I install Avast Internet Security 2015, I am unable to connect to WIDI. I can see the device but can not establish a connection. This afternoon, I discovered that I can make the connection if I disable the Avast firewall, which leads me to believe it is a configuration issue with my Avast firewall setup.

Can anyone provide me with the correct AVAST firewall settings to allow WIDI to work properly?

Look at the firewall log to see what is blocked, then set a rule for it.

Hi, same problem here. Have a Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter and want to connect it with my MS Surface Pro 3. Avast Firewall (Internet Security 2015) running. When I turn off the firewall, connection works flawlessly. After turning firewall it starts to connect but ends with a error message (Win8.1, Connection not possible).

I tried to figure out which program is used for the connection: At least one of them is WUDFHost.exe. I set a rule “Allow, all protocols, In/Out, no address, no ports” and put it on top. But the firewall still blocks this program (seen in protocol).

It’s some years ago when I had to modify firewall rules (different firewall), but in Avast it’s a usability nightmare. Why not “right click, allow”? Could be that simple.

Ok, my fault. Firewall was set to “public” instead of “home” (German “Öffentlich” instead of “zuhause”). Now it works even with the default rules (in Win8/8.1, WiDi uses the following IP range: 192.168.173.0-192.168.173.255, which is covered by the “Friends” (“Freunde”) addresses - when the firewall is set to “home”.
