Avast won't download past 72 kB

For the last 2 hours (evening, April 8, 2009), I have tried to download Avast Home Edition 4.8.1335.90319 without success. I have tried the Avast site, the CNET site, the VersionTracker site, and a few others. All of them stop downloading at roughly 72 kilobytes. Sometimes the browser reports 72.0 kB, sometimes 72.7, sometimes 72.3 kB. The download is instantaneous up to that point, and then no new data is downloaded. I’ve let it hang for up to ten minutes, and then killed the downloads.

I have tried to download the file, setupeng.exe, on three different computers, using three different operating systems and three different browsers. Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 2200, Mac OS 10.4.11 on a PowerMac G5, and Mac OS 10.5.6 on an iMac 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Browsers: Internet Explorer 6, Safari 3.2.1, Firefox 3.0.8. I am aware that this file will not run on a Mac. I had hopes of downloading it on the Mac, and then copying it to the PC.

I thought that the problem might be in my university network. I tried downloading another file from other sites, and had no problems. Avast is recommended by my university, so I doubt that it is blocked by the IT department.

Perhaps it is a transient problem at the download sites.

Any ideas?

Did you use the same computer In this case?

The download of the setupeng.exe failed on all these computer?
Were you using your school network with all these computers?

Your conclusion seems logical.

For CNET that could be an issue but I doubt that that is the case for the download from the avast site.

I would have guessed you had a virus since you are prevented from downloading a security application BUT since the same thing happens on a MAC I’m not sure.
Try to answer my questions and wait to see some of the other forum members replies… T

Answering Confused Computer User’s questions, I tried to download on all three computers, and got similar hangs at ~72kB on all of them. The download failed on all these computers. I tried two browsers on each computer, and got the same results with each. I was on the same computer network for all, in fact in the same room. All attempts were through my university network.

I have now returned home, and I have downloaded the file from my Comcast home connection on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.4.11. So I would say that the evidence points toward some kind of blocking at my university. Thanks for your help.

Sure, although I didn’t really help. Strange that a University would do that.

Anyhow,
Cheers
