Avast won't install

Hi. Have tried installing Avast Free Antivirus but nothing seems to happen. All that happens when I run the installer is a grey box appears with the Avast logo in it and a blue line that moves from side to side. Initially I assumed that it was working but after three hours I figured something was wrong. All I get when I run the installer is the same grey box with the blue line for hour after hour after hour… I have attached a screen capture of the box I’m talking about. The light blue line just goes from left to right and back again. It gets kind of hypnotic after a few hours.

  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

Windows 7 Ultimate, Service Pack1, 64 bit.

Was previously using Norton 360. It has been uninstalled and I’m not running any other security software.

First, be sure to get rid of all remnants of your prior installed AV(s)…!!

Then:

  1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

Nothing has changed. The installation file that I downloaded initially was avast_free_antivirus_setup_online_a1l.exe but using avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe has made no difference.

There are no earlier versions of Avast installed on this computer and I’ve run the Nortons removal tool twice.

I’ve created the new post. Strangely, when I download the installation file using Chrome rather than Internet Explorer the box that appears when I run the file looks like the attachment. The orange stripe just goes round and round, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter.

OK. Side note, only download from Avast directly…!!
The “_a1l” part in your OL-installer is quite suspicious…

The most recent copy I downloaded doesn’t have the “a1|” on the end but the same thing happens if I run it.
