Avast won't show on the taskbar OR desktop when installed! Please HELP

I just upgraded from Win 2000 Pro to Win XP Pro. Everything seemed to go fine but got a Windows message that Avast needs to be reloaded. Did so, loaded the latest (version 4.7 for Home) and got registered but even though Avast shows up in the program menu it won’t install in the taskbar or desktop. Additionally, when I ran a scan and found a virus and clicked on “move to chest”, I got the message “Virus chest server not running. RPC communication failed.”. I was forced to select the “delete” option. Please help.

Thanks in advance,
Dean ???

If you upgraded over the existing win2k installation you will need to reinstall avast.

If Not:
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard or OnGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc. ?

Additionally, when I ran a scan and found a virus and clicked on "move to chest", I got the message "Virus chest server not running. RPC communication failed.". I was forced to select the "delete" option.

You had another option, move/rename that doesn’t send it to the chest, but the moved folder (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\moved) adding the suffix to the file name of .vir e.g. example-file.exe.vir. This avoids the deletion option which should only be used as an absolutely the last option.

i had an older version of Avast in Win 2K but don’t know which. I didn’t remove before installing the new version (4.7). I have Adaware installed but is not active i.e. it does not run by itself. I manually run it occasionally. I also have Zone Alarm (firewall), which I stopped before installing Avast (after the upgrade to XP). I’ll try removing Avast and reinstalling again. I appreciate any other ideas.

I think a clean reinstall of avast would be best.

Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

Now uninstall, reboot, run the uninstall utility, reboot install the latest version, reboot.

Done! It works but there is a conflict with some Zone alarm security files/procedures. I’ll find out soon enough if it’s bad. A window popped up notifying me that this is a known issue and Avast is working on it.
THANKS FOR THE FAST HELP!

No problem, glad I could help.

Are you using ZA Pro ?

If so you should have answered Yes to the Compatibility question and then manually set your browser to use the web shield Proxy.
ZONE ALARM - AVAST Web Shield compatibility dialogue - Install/Update Question - YES or NO
Also see http://www.avast.com/eng/webshield_issues.html.

If you are using ZoneAlarm Pro and Privacy Control in ZoneAlarm is set to High and if you click YES in avast compatibility dialogue box the transparent mode proxy in web shield will be turned off you have to manually configure browser to access internet.
