avast wont update....

keep geeting warning messages in the bottom left corner of my screen, it starts to update, but the overall progres bar isnt moving, even after about half an hour. can anyone help??

Is this the warning that you are getting, see image ?

If so:
What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

Please, upload (attach) the avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log
(or the shorter C:\Users\All Users\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\Setup.log).

If the file is too big for the forum, post the last 400-500 lines of it.

Firstly thanks for the reply, I am not an expert with computers so please bear with me.

In answer to your questions:

yeah thats the warning.

the firewall should allow this, as it has updated many times ok in the past.

how do I delete the entry for this?

You’re welcome.

We need to know what firewall you are using (as asked), before we can possibly say how to delete the entry for avast.setup ?

its windows firewall. (XP)

See if you can get help from the following article:

This one may be easier to follow:
http://www.technipages.com/blockunblock-programs-in-windows-firewall.html

The windows XP firewall has zero outbound protection, so it shouldn’t be blocking it.

Try the avastUI, Settings, Updates, Proxy Settings and select the Direct connection (no proxy)

I tried this and the warning is still appearing and avast still wont update…

To try and help further we are going to need to look at the setup file that Tech asked for in Reply #2 above.

How do you connect to the internet, dial-up or broadband ?
Ensure that the correct option is checked in the Update Parameters, see the image in my last post (click to expand).
