I’m not sure if I’m in the right part of the forums or not but I wondered if anyone can point me in the right direction of how to deal with this issue.
First of all I’m not sure what I’ve changed or how to change back if necesary or if I’m properly covered.
Zone alarm free sent me new update window which I followed and then I think it was avast that popped up saying there was an issue with what I think is webscanner or something and 2 tickboxes with yes or no suggesting I tick one of them only if I had no issues but as I had only just updated zone alarm I wouldnt know if I had issues but as avast were saying there were issues I just went with avasts suggestion. It then said I had to set up a proxy which I didnt do last night I wanted to wait till I found out more about it.
Now I’m not sure what I have changed by ticking the box and because I havent set up the proxy if I am not covered properly. I have had no previous issues using both programs so could I undo the tick I did last night? (cant rem if it was the yes or no but it was the one that said I needed a proxy)
Since 4.7.892 version of September 25, 2006, avast gets improved detection of ZoneAlarm Pro (to prevent unnecessary WebShield incompatibility warnings). So, if you’re using ZA free, you won’t see the avast! Web Shield compatibility dialogue while installing/updating avast.
Anyway, if the question appears and you are using ZoneAlarm Free you should click NO, because privacy features are not present in ZoneAlarm Free this will not turn off webshield transparent mode proxy.
Use a text editor and edit the avast4.ini file, the default installation location is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini (I would advise you copy avast4.ini before editing it, just in case).
Locate the line containing ZoneAlarmCompatibility= and delete that line or, if you want to keep this line, set it to 0. Save the edited avast4.ini file.
If you are using ZoneAlarm Pro and Privacy Control in ZoneAlarm is set to High and if you click YES in avast comptability dialog box the transparent mode proxy in webshield will be turned off you have to manually configure browser to access internet. To manually configure your browser watch instructional video. In this case, the value ZoneAlarmCompatibility=1 should be at avast4.ini file.
I am using zone alarm free the new update 8.0.065.000. At least I think its free?
I don’t understand why I got the webshield incompatibility dialog if I’m using zonealarm free but it came
up.
From what you are saying if I’m on zonealarm free my avast webshield transparent mode setting should be turned on? If so and I have turned it off by accident where can I turn it back on again? I have looked in settings on avast and cant find anything
Edit:
I might have found the webshield settings for avast, in the avast on access scanner section? It says in the webshield its set at high and says above this provider is currenty running. It also says last scanned nothing, last infected nothing, so I don’t know if thats the right place or not
The fact that it is running doesn’t matter if you have effectively disabled its use (the lack of a last scanned seems to confirm this), which you would if you answered Yes to the compatibility question ?
Some of the so called free versions of ZA had trial functionality in them in the hope that you would buy the Pro version. The one that causes the incompatibility with the Web Shield proxy is ZA’s privacy function, do you have that on your free version of ZA ?
I did wonder if I had installed a trial vedsion by accident I never take the free trials but its saying it doesnt require a licence key and still offering me a free trial. Its not the same free zone alarm version that is on download.com but on the zonealarm site ot does not say the version numbers just the product.
In my settings its saying the same in p2p shield- last scanned nothing infected nothing, the only ones saying anything in that list is the instant messaging, network field and standard shield hope this is normal.
Since I did the update for za the program has changed its skin but I thought that might be just part of the update. Whatever it is though I have just got to uninstal and reinstal both by the looks of it.
Don’t compare differences in other providers, they are unrelated to the web shield as it is a different process, our problem is with the web shield proxy not used by any other provider, so lets concentrate on that issue first.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled a fresh download of free zonealarm from thier site and it did turn out to be the free version I had which gave me the avast webshield warning window.
I checked the webshield again in Avast and it seems all might now be functioning correctly, maybe it corrected itself when I reinstalled zone alarm.
The webshield is now saying last scanned forum avast and scanned count 41 at the moment so this is probably working ok now?
I think that because you had previously been asked about ZA avast remembers that and asks in the future.
It, the web shield, wouldn’t correct itself after a reinstall of ZA, that would be down to answering No to the compatibility question, which doesn’t disable the transparent proxy used by the web shield.
Yes everything appears to be working correctly now.
It’s less confusing to download ZoneAlarm from filehippo, you can be sure to only get the free version there. I say this for the benefit of any that are reading this thread.
After updating to the latest version of Zone Alarm Free firewall I too was confronted with the avast! warning about incompatible software. It stated that the Web Shield module has compatibility problems with ZA’s privacy blocking feature. Unfortunately the warning does not inform users that the issue is specific to ZA Pro and I followed the avast! suggestion to turn off the transparent proxy mode of the Web Shield module by selecting Yes. I have read this post and located the folder C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA. There is no .ini file that I can find but opening Configuration Settings brings up avast4 - Notepad. Scrolling near the bottom I can locate the line Zone Alarm Compatibility=1. Can I simply delete the 1 and replace it with 0, then save the Notepad file in order to turn the transparent proxy mode of the Web Shield module back on? Thanks for your input!
If the question appears and you are using ZoneAlarm Free you should click NO, because privacy features are not present in ZoneAlarm Free this will not turn off webshield transparent mode proxy.
The problem is in the free version ZoneLabs is trying to push the Pro version and it will install the pro trial unless the user unchecked the option in the installation of the free version.
So they effectively downloaded the free version but end up with a pro trial with all the associated functionality and avast sees that additional functionality and the ZA Pro compatibility window pops-up. The problem being if they select No with the Privacy function of the pro trial installed they could experience problems with logons at the likes of hotmail and yahoo as we say in the past.
Thanks Tech and DavidR for sharing your knowledge. I made the switch from 1 to 0 following ZoneAlarmCompatibility, restarted my PC and the Web Shield now shows a Scanned Count of 181 (previously 0). The switch apparently also turned on the Avast On-Access scanner message feature but, a search of the forum lead to another helpful post on how to uncheck “Show detailed information on action performed” to keep it from appearing. All seems fine now.
