I just found something lurking about in the programs section of my ZoneAlarm firewall, and at first glance it appears to be connected with Avast!
My question is this; Is AVASTSS.SCR something that is associated with Avast! or is it something evil that has snuck into my PC? If it is a legitimate part of Avast! why would it need to access the Internet?
Is, AVASTSS.SCR is the screen saver module of avast. It scans the computer while your screen saver is running.
It’s a legit application.
But, it shouldn’t ask for Internet access at all. You can remove the ZA entry or deny access to it (at least, the access to Internet, not other network connections, file access, etc.).
Hi wendy k. walker
Are you concerned because of (file missing) showing in HiJackThis?
If so, then don’t be, file missing on HiJackThis is correct only on 02 and 03 entries.
Ignore any 023 reference to avast processes, this is a hiccup in the HJT 1.99.1 (especially missing file entry for avast), if you need any help with any of the analysis let us know.
If the files were missing the Web Shield and Internet Mail scanners wouldn’t be working, so you would notice, no rotating avast icon, etc.
Thanks for the information. I just came from there reading other peoples problems.
I’m not knocking free help, but way too many people reply to the HJT questions that I saw posted there.
I use Bleepingcomputers, and Geeks to go to post a HJT log. They only allow their Admin people to reply to your HJT posts there, and to me that’s not so confusing.

Yes it is little confusing when a lot of people are replying and all of them telling you what to do, no problem, go to Geeks to Go forum and post HJT log there. Me and Essexboy from this forum graduated in G2G, but i am still not allowed to reply in malware removal forum because i haven’t finished all exams.
Hey cool so you’re in geek U? I already posted this one on bleeping computers though. I use both of those services, and I know their really good at what they do.
