Avasti 5.0 startup will not START UP. Ticket 324267234

We have used a free copy of AVASTI on a WIN 98 computer for the last year. The free copy expired. We downloaded the 5.0 setup file into the Programs folder. Also downloaded the License file and copied it into the same folder. When I doubleclick on the Setup file a message appears saying a new version of Windows was expected and I must update my Windows 98 software. The free copy has been running for a year but the setup file that we downloaded will NOT START. Any hints on what to do? We are frustrated and would like to have our amount charged to our credit card refunded if we cannot get this to work. Please advise. Thank you. This was submitted on Ticket 324267235 (March 27) but there has been no response of any kind from any source. It appears our money has disappeared into a big black hole. The computer is unprotected. Any help?? Don

How to contact avast

Is this download at that web site . . . Avasti Version 4.8 or 5.0? Thank you.

?
Avast 5 will not run on Win98. No matter where you download it.

Do ask for a refund, contact sales@avast.com or the store, where you downloaded it.

What should I download? How do I solve the problem that my exiisting Avasti was working fine and simply expired. How do I get the existing verison working again?? Thank you. [I did not realize the flashing red sign in the corner of the screen was going to download a non-working version. We simply followed the default instructions which turned out to be wrong.]

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version or, in your case, the latest 4.8 version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
  7. Check and post the results.

Download the version 4.8 again and proceed, as Tech wrote.
However - I don’t think the free version of 4.8 will be supported for a long time.
You should consider in updating your Operating System… you are 5 generations behind.

Thank you!!! Will give it a try and let you know the result . . . later.

I followed the instructions, removed the previous Version 4.8, downloaded a new Version 4.8 setup file. The setup ran fine and the software is now working. [The license I received along with the Version 5.0 was rejected. So will need a Version 4.8 License.] This is my first experience installing Avast software and it was difficult and frustrating. A total of 9 hours was spent trying to sort out how to access Technical Help and getting the problems resolved. The Technical Help system was not 'User Friendly" at all in my opinion. The email response that I received acknowledging the order of the Version 5.0 did not provide enough detail on how to get Technical Help. The response should be more 'User Friendly" and provide a significant link to this Forum. Thank you.
