I’ve an Avast Internet Security 17.5.2303 on a Windows 7 Ultimate desktop.
After the last upgrade the UI came very sensitive. If I scan something (file, folder etc.) the process avastui.exe will take almost all of cpu. The Sysinternals Process Explorer shows that threads by start address ucrtbase.DLL!_crt_at_quick_exit+0xb0 shares the cpu load.
If I open Protection / Antivirus I’ll get “Loading” on that tab an a thread. Also the Result / Details button has same function.
Logging off and in again helps but that’s not very convenient;)
Try the following: Repair Avast:
Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB204
Avast has been the only AV-software on these computers from the initial install for 7 years.
Repairing made no difference in my case.
I prepared for clean install by taking screen shots of some log screens (e.g. Virus Chest).
The Clean Install of Avast solved the problem on both computers.
