Hi!
I’m a new user of the avast!4 Home edition. I’d just like to know whether the Home edition finds and kills backdoor software.
Thanks.
A search of the avast virus database for backdoor returns 116 hits so I would say yes.
However, like anything in life nothing is totally guaranteed.
Thank you, DavidR.
I’m quite comfortable with 116 backdoor def.
Welcome to the forums.
Thanks.
It’s rather nice around here.
Hello mogenicwolf,
Yes an integral part of your defense against backdoors come via your AV solution, then an anti-trojan scanner is good to add, furthermore the first line in defense is a good tweaked Firewall.
I always think a good hosts file keeps a lot of nasties out. Use a safer browser like Opera or Firefox and allow scripts on the fly (NoScript), I also like to pre-scan all my links with the in-browser Dr. Web scanner plug in on their bihourly updated update server in St. Petersburg, so after scanning I can click a link knowing it has no ill effects for me. Special interesting information about backdoors here: http://securityfocus.com/infocus/1701

Hi, Polonus.
I’ve also been using Firefox (1.06) with NoScript plug-in, but I didn’t know anything about Dr. Web. So, I took your advice and installed it. Thanks. All I need now is a good anti-trojan. Do you have any advice which a/t I should use? I’ve stumbled across Mcafee Avert Stinger 2.5.4? Is it any good, or should I try sth else?
I’m using ZoneAlarm 6.0 firewall.
Have you heard of ProcessGuard? It’s a rather interesting program. Check it out on

Interesting program that occasionally creates interesting conflicts. I only ever used the free version which only gives protection to one program (apart from itself).
I eventually uninstalled it after a comment from one of the Alwil team, if a virus can shut down programs, what is to stop it shutting down system processes. So what use one program.
Maybe you’re right, but there hasn’t been any conflict at all on my system.
What about anti-trojan software? Can you reccommend any?
Thx
McAfee Stinger is a pretty good program that’s free. You can go ahead and see for yourself.
Hi mogenicwolf,
A good free anti-trojan is a-squared, download it from here:
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/. It is regularly updated, scans are complete, even finds adware. I think it is a good completion of your layered security. But you know my friend, what is your best line of defense? That is a good working human brain. Think before you click or down- or upload. Well mogenicwolf, scan regularly and surf safe!

Besides a squared, already suggested, test Ewido: http://www.ewido.net 8)
I hope I shan’t do anything wrong by testing all of them (a/t I mean). I’ll let you know which one suits me best.
Thank you all.

The only thing you need to take care of is running two resident scanners at the same time as that can cause conflict. Fortunately most of those tools are on-demand scanners and not resident, I also pause Standard Shield whilst I scan with other tools, 1) this avoids conflict if a virus/trojan is detected and 2) it is quicker because avast isn’t scanning the files that the trojan software is opening to check.
a-squared is definitely my choice. 8)
