First download the latest version of the program from avast.com and copy it to a different partition to the one you intend to format of 2nd hard disk or CD or USB drive as that will have all the latest updates. You should also save your registration email with your key as well. Use that when you reinstall after a format.

Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it as mentioned above.

If you have lost your registration email, complete (or do it later after reinstall) the avast! 4 Home Registration form and you will receive an email from register @ avast.com (without the spaces) with your registration key.

If you want to save your settings, just copy avast4.ini and avast4.db files from avast folder (if you install the new avast in the same path of the old one). You can backup your skins folder also. Updates backup? I don’t think you need to do that.

Ruhan, indeed you don’t need backup updates. When you re-install the last Avast! version, there will be few updates from that day on, even if you are on dial-up.
