beeping sound

whenever i run a scan i receive a beeping sound(about 4-6 beeps). does not seem to matter what area i scan…also all
sounds are turned off and there are no viruses detected…
any ideas??

many thanks… ???

Which avast…??
Which version…??
OS…??

sorry…running win7 32 bit sp1…avast 6.0.1289 completely updated

many thanks…

Try enabling all the sounds options in Avast (at least just for test). Do you still hear the beeps then? Any other sounds when that option is enabled?

Well, from avast! you usuallly get 3 pings, if something is detected.
So, if you get 4-6 this must be something else…

Hi,

If still the issue persists, try to do a clean installation from the scratch..
Download the uninstall utility from the http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe link and save it.
To remove the currently installed avast!, Open avast! GUI, click on Settings (on top right corner) -> Troubleshooting -> Uncheck "Enable avast! self-defence module" and click on OK.
Run the aswclear.exe utility to remove avast! from the machine.

 OR

Try boot into Safe Mode and run the removal tool.
Once you remove the avast!, make sure that you reboot the machine.
Download the latest version of avast! product that you have purchased and install it.

Try now to scan the files and please update back regarding the beep sound.

Have a wonderful day. Good Karma! :)

double checked & there are exactly 6 beeps…
ady4um… enabled all sounds & beeps still happen but no other
sounds …
yogisolutions1… did complete removal using aswclear, reinstalled and the beeps are still happening…

many thanks… ???

Why do you think this is related to avast…??
Any pop-ups or messages…??

I have to admit that I have no idea what triggers those beeps, if indeed it is Avast itself that is triggering them.

I mean, is there any other event that could be simultaneously triggering those beeps? For example, the appearance of some window? Is there any other situation that triggers those beeps?

Can you check your BIOS settings and change them (at least for testing)? The beeps and error messages in the BIOS settings are usually in the “general” configuration of your BIOS (and they can also be related to USB or PS2 devices).

I admit these questions are more “blind” shots than anything else, but you may found some other related behaviour / event.

i think it is avast because i have had this pc several yrs & never had beeps b4 installing avast…also beeps only occur
when running avast…have used other avs and never had beeps,
so i would conclude that beeps must be coming from avast…
no other popups, windows, etc. appear during scan…
will try the bios settings & post back…

many thanks… ???

Yes, please post back any possible feedback. To me, this a first in relation to Avast.

BTW, you should run the respective removal utilities for old security tools you ever HAD (including those you already uninstalled).

A partial list is located at http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software/.

Well, if avast! beeps it displays a pop-up as well.
If you don’t see any it’s most likely not related to avast.

Hi,

We don’t think this is an issue related with avast!. Can you confirm that the beep sound comes only when you scan the computer using avast!.

Which is AntiVirus software that you had used in the computer before? Have you removed it completely from the computer? As ady4um mentioned above, you will get the removal tool from the website which is given in above post and remove it from the computer.

Please update back. Have a wonderful day. Good Karma!

i have removed all other avs & this only occurs when running avast…i have done more testing & the beeping seems to only happen when doing ‘command line scans’…i ran the exact same scan in gui and no beeps…ran same scan via command line & beeps sounded again, predominately when doing full rootkit
scan and doing scan of ‘c’ drive…have not tested any other scan areas yet…

many thanks… ???

How many did you have…???

when i said “avs” i meant only one…avira

i have used kis in the past, but that was removed long ago…

cheers…

Hi.

Can you update us with the status of "other scan areas".

Have a wonderful day. Good Karma! :)

have to wait till later…will post results of ‘other scan areas’ in little while…

many thanks…

@emilemma,

From your report, it “seems” like Avast command line scanner is using beeps to “tell you something”, just as the GUI would use some sounds in some cases.

Maybe there is some command line argument / parameter to run Avast command line scanner with no beeps, but please pay attention to what exactly Avast is trying to “tell you” with those beeps.

If the beep is only saying “I’ve finish the scan and all is OK”, then it would be “acceptable” to set the scan to be “soundless” (“beepless”). Note however that I am NOT recommending cancelling the beep in such case either.

If, OTOH, the beeps are saying “hey, please pay attention to the results, since something seems fishy”, then I wouldn’t take that situation as “acceptable”.

I guess the only way to find out is to start a short / middle command line scan (instead of having to wait for the complete “C:” drive), and after the beeps:

1._ Compare the new beeps with the previous ones you had; and,
2._ Check the log results of the scan, so to (maybe) relate the beeps to the specific results.

I hope I was clear enough (don’t hesitate to ask again).

Be sure to get rid of both…!!
