For various reasons I still run a Windows XP laptop (Dell Inspiron 1300). I used the Avast free antivirus for a while but then ditched it in favour of the AVG free antivirus.
I used Windows Add or Remove Programs (as you would) to remove the Avast free antivirus, but then noticed when running Belarc Advisor that it still showed:
avast! Antivirus Version 5.0.168036537
Virus Definitions Version Up To Date
Realtime File Scanning Off
I ran the Avast removal tool in Safe Mode but the Belarc Advisor profile was unchanged. Anyone know how to completely remove Avast free antivirus?
I did a clean install of Windows XP (from CD) onto a freshly formatted HDD a year ago and went for whatever free product was available from Avast at the time. I’ve just done a search of “avast” files and folders in Windows and this brings up various files starting x86_avast… or x86_policy… with creation date (coincidentally) of 30 October 2014 (yes, 2014).
I also use CCleaner regularly - on both the XP laptop and my general purpose Win 7 laptop (also an Inspiron 1300).
If you can post either a belarc log file of its scan or a screenshot, showing exactly what it has found.
There are some registry entries (Legacy Keys) that are under the control of MS Windows, these would be removed in due course by windows, hence the request for details.
If you look in the task manager, do you actually see any avast entries ?
