I am unable to get Beta up date to connect. (I disabled the self defense and set proxy settings for Firefox per instructions.)

PS AVIRA antivir will not up date now.

Not sure what you mean by “Beta update”.
What are you attempting to update?
Did you realize that you should not have two antivirus applications installed? Running Avast and Avira will lead to all sorts of problems, likely this among them.
Normally there is not a need to have all the providers on Avast set to High; it can result in quite a performance hit.
