Blocking files in Thunderbird

avast! 5 Pro Antivirus is blocking my .exe files in Thunderbird. While I like the general idea of what’s going on, it’s annoying when a friend of mine is trying to send me a program file, and I would rather just have avast! scan it and block it if it’s infected than have the .exe files blocked before I’m ever even able to download.

Any way I can change that setting to get what I want?

For the record, I have these specs: 1.994 GHz Intel, 512 MB RAM, Windows XP Pro, and Avast 5.0.507.

avast doesn’t block, but scans and alerts to infection, so are you getting alerts by avast ?

If you say it is blocking, what error messages are displayed ?

So if there is an apparent blocking, there is something else going on, there are a number of email clients (and some ISPs) that block the attachment of executable files.

Could you please post a screenshot, when the file gets blocked…??

If there’s some sort of setting in Thunderbird messing things up, I haven’t found it, and I can download attachments from my e-mail’s web interface just fine. The icon from the .exe is stripped from it once I download the message in Thunderbird and I can’t do anything with it, whether it’s scanned or not. Could it be something wrong with the IMAP?

I don’t use thunderbird, so I can’t be much practical help.

Try unchecking the scan inbound email in the Mail Shield settings or Temporarily stop it.

Now try to receive another email with an .exe attachment, what happens ?

Not Avast. The only thing that’d be (rightly) blocking such attachments would be this:

Start → Run → gpedit.msc → User Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Attachment Manager

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I just found out the problem and thought I should update.

As it turns out, it wasn’t an avast! problem. It turned out to be a setting in my Outpost anti-spyware mail shield. Sorry about that! ::slight_smile:

No problem, thanks for your feedback…!
