Pretty much except I don’t have it set to autmatically restart. And the Default operation system says “Microsoft Windows XP Home Edtion” /fastdetect /No Execute=OptIn. Not that it matters, but that’s what’s different
XQueenOfPainX: Have you moved the paging file to another drive or partition (from boot drive) ?
I only have one hard drive and it’s not partitioned.
Good point pk.
XQueenOfPainX, what are your Page file settings?
Control Panel → System → Advanced → Performance Settings → Advanced → Virtual Memory → Change.
Look at the screenshot from my system, for example…
Thanks
mine says 672-1344 for the C drive and at the bottom is says minimum allowed is 2 MB. recommended is 670 MB and currently allocated is 672 MB
What firewall (+ version) do you use ?
I have service pack 2 so the windows firewall is what’s on here.
@ XQueenOfPainX
are you running a pre-configured machine? Something like a laptop with “one button recovery” perhaps??
Its an Emachine (yeah I know)
Did it come with a “trial” or time limited version of a different anti-virus solution?
It came with Norton. And a month or so ago I started having major problems and was positive I had a virus or two, but Norton wouldn’t detect anything. So I had to re-install windows. I had to use the cd’s that came with the computer and it put everything back the way it was when the computer was bought. The first thing I did was uninstall Norton, then looked for a different anti-virus software and found avast!.
@ XQueenOfPainX
are you sure you completely un-installed Norton?
A search here (on the board) will get you lots of results on a FULL un-install of Norton. If you used the restore disks, and just did a remove from Add/remove programmes, there is every chance that some registry entries still exist that can cause conflict not just with other anti-virus programmes but also internet connections etc.
There might also be some “machine specific” driver issues about Emachine hardware, but best to totally remove Norton first.
Ok I’ll try doing a search on here for norton. As far as I know it’s totally gone. I did do the add/remove programs to get rid of it but I also went through the registry and got rid of all the entries I could find for it. I will definitely try it though.
Better: dir c:\windows\system32\drivers /d >output.txt
and copy&paste output.txt file here
@ pk
command syntax correct? Doesn’t work for me.
ok what do you want me to do? Sorry I’m a little confused. I don’t see any files or anything with that name.
Are you sure you have completely removed Norton?
If so (after a reboot) go to add/remove programmes and try a repair of avast! … and another reboot.
Yes I’m positive Norton is totally removed.
Try repair option for avast! first and reboot.
If it doesn’t work, remove and re-install avast!
