Blue Screen

I am using a HP laptop with Vista. I had a virus on my computer that was causing error messages that would say something like microsoft office crashed and needed to be closed. I took off all the other antivirus programs, installed Avast. The first time booting up after installing Avast, my system crashed and will now only let me boot in safe mode. I called the Avast support, which is iyogi and they want to charge me 169. to fix the problem and get one year of service. They said the problem is two virus’ Root kit and av8 and the problem is in the registry files with corrupt files. Has anyone else had this problem, and is there a fix? I can’t afford the 169. and hoping there is a fix that I can do.

I suggest you follow these steps (the ones you could do in Safe Mode):

  1. Clean your temporary files.
  2. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on. If avast does not detect it, you can try DrWeb CureIT! instead.
  3. Use Comodo Cleaning Essentials (CCE), or MBAM, or SUPERantispyware to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, it is better and safer to send the infected file(s) to quarantine (Chest), rather than simply deleting them.
  4. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest avast! antirootkit or Trend Micro RootkitBuster.
  5. Read this instructions and provide more info with the logs generated. But, please, do NOT post there, open a NEW thread for your specific problem and help us to help you.
  6. Clean your Hosts file (replacing it) with HostsMan tool.
  7. Disable System Restore and then reenable it again.
  8. Immunize your system with SpywareBlaster.
  9. Check if you have insecure applications with Secunia Software Inspector.

If the infection avoids booting the computer, take a look here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=79107.0

Since your system is only booting in “Safe Mode”, try to do the following steps :-

  1. Click on Run> Type MSCONFIG
  2. Click on Tab “Boot” - If “Safe Boot” is selected, Un-check the same, click on Apply and then try to reboot your system.

If the issue is still not resolved then:

  1. Reboot your system in “Safe Mode with Command Prompt” and type the following command to open the System Restore Window :- CD\ CD windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

You will get the System Restore Window (where you may see some dates are in “BOLD”), select a date prior to the infection date and continue with the restoration.

  1. Once you are done with the restoration or if you are not able to do system restore, download/install & execute scan using Malware Bytes (you can download Malware Bytes from www.cnet.com)

  2. Post completion of the scan, if there are any infections detected, remove the same and continue with the installation of AVAST.

(Please remember to follow the checklist before installation of AVAST Antivirus:
a) Un-installation of previous antivirus, anti-spyware, etc;
b) Check Registry for any leftover entries of the previous antivirus (you can use any type Registry Cleaners or AVAST Un-installer for the same);
c) If the current antivirus includes firewall then disable Windows Firewall before installing AVAST;
d) Check whether the latest Win XP Service Pack is installed or not;
e) Some conflicting tools may lead to slow performance of AVAST. In case you are using any of those tools, please un-install them)

  1. Post installation of AVAST, check for Antivirus Update settings.
