Start avast and look in the menu, the option to schedule a boot scan is there. But it works only on NT based systems.

If you have XP or Win2k, you could enable a boot time scan. Right click the avast icon, select Start avast! Antivirus, Menu, ‘Schedule boot-time scan…’

Only on Windows 2000 or XP there is this option…
If you have a computer with them , you can follow David’s advice or just run:
C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast4\sched.exe /A:*
