BSOD showing Avast related issue

Hi there!

I recently installed a new HDD in my computer, and did a full PC format. Installed Avast as one of the first things on my fresh system, and shortly after, I began getting bluescreens. It has been happening 4 times since yesterday, and when analyzing the crash with WhoCrashed, it shows the same error codes in all 4 dumps.

The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver that cannot be identified at this time.

A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: aswstm.sys (Stream Filter, AVAST Software).
Google query: aswstm.sys AVAST Software SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION

2 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. A third party driver has been identified to be causing system crashes on your computer. It is strongly suggested that you check for updates for these drivers on their company websites. Click on the links below to search with Google for updates for these drivers:

aswstm.sys (Stream Filter, AVAST Software)

I already searched the forum, but none of the BSOD topics has the same error code. Any suggestions please? I am rather desperate, as I am using my home PC for work :frowning:

OK Chris, I forwarded it.

Thank you! Do you need anything else? Computer specs, etc?

Also, FYI, I did a memtest and completed with no errors.

It’s beneficial to always post basic specs such as OS version, CPU and amount of RAM.
It’s helpful for the record and much more useful to others searching for similar problems

Well, specs are these:

Windows 10 Home Edition [x64], version 10.0.17134 Build 17134
Intel i7-7700K @ 4.20GHz
Asus PRIME Z270-P ATX, BIOS v. 0812
2x DDR4-3000 16GB Corsair Vengeance XMP RAM
Nvidia GTX 1080 ROG Strix
Samsung SSD 850 EVO, 1TB
WD Black WD6003FZBX 6TB

Noticable software installed atm:

Adobe Creative Cloud
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Muse
Adobe Photoshop
Autodesk 3ds Max
Autodesk AutoCAD
Avast Free Antivirus
Battle.Net Launcher
Discord
Dropbox
Malwarebytes
Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016
SketchUp Pro
Spotify
Steam
WhoCrashed
World of Warcraft

Regarding Avast & Malwarebytes, see: https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/200324-exclusions-for-avast-users/

Would this still apply even though I am not actively running mbam (as in completely closed, and not idle in task manager or system tray)?. I only use mbam to occasionally scan for malware, and I never keep it running.

Hi ChrisKay,
can you upload system dump to avast ftp server?

The default location of the dump file is %SystemRoot%memory.dmp or C:Windowsmemory.dmp if C: is the system drive. Windows can also capture small memory dumps which occupy less space. These dumps are created at %SystemRoot%Minidump.dmp (C:WindowsMinidump.dump if C: is the system drive)

please zip the dump file as ChrisKay_BSOD_9_2018.zip and upload it our ftp server.
