Hello,please help me out with this problem,after 2 weeks holiday XP did 9 updates,Avast also updated.Took ages,went to bed.Next morning system showed message system\32\nstoskrnl.exe missing.Corrected that.
,did chkdsk ,fixboot,tried repair with XP CD.to no avail…
Now when i boot up in safe mode XP boots up up to system32\Drivers\asWRvrt.sys but then hangs,after some time I get BSOD session 5 initialization failed.
Found out that asWRvrt.sys is an avast file.
Never had any problems with Avast but now I am stuck.
On this forum I found some information,eg: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=120999.msg926266#msg926266,but apparently a windows 7 machine.
All help would be much appreciated.

This will reset your computer to before the windows updates
Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run Frst as before and press fix
On completion reboot to normal windows

I tried this,but no effect,same problem,fixlog says it worked but it did not…

Hi Essexboy,
I did as you told ,in safe mode i get somewhat further this driver: C:\Windows\System32\DRIVERS\iomdisk.sys 9D7069D72C0C72952F05E1688A5AE89D loads succesfully but then again BSOD.
Do you see other options apart from reinstall XP? . I am somewhat afraid to lose data.

Nope it will probably need a re-install _ I do have a programme that will enable you to back up data though
which program do you recommend to save the data?
Please print these instruction out so that you know what you are doing
[*]Download OTLPENet.exe to your desktop
[*]Ensure that you have a blank CD in the drive
[*]Double click OTLPENet.exe and this will then open imgburn to burn the file to CD
[*]Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
[*]As the CD needs to detect your hardware and load the operating system, I would recommend a nice cup of tea whilst it loads
[*]Your system should now display a Reatogo desktop.
Note : as you are running from CD it is not exactly speedy
[*]You will now have access to all your files and can back them up to USB
