BUG: File System Shield continues to scan files when DISABLED

Avast 5.0.594 FREE
XP SP3

I just noticed that after disabling the File System Shield, that Avast continues to scan some files. (See attached screen capture, where you will note that more than 900 files were scanned after disabling the Shield.) Most interestingly, I have observed only JPG and LNK files being scanned, though that’s just from watching the “last file scanned” field. Also interesting is that the files are scanned even if they are placed on the exclusions list (though when the Shield is on, the exclusions work properly).

Please fix this. Thanks.

And a final, unrelated question: Why are JPGs being scanned in the first place?

you mean it should not ?
These URLs contain valid JPEG files with the malware code appended on them. The malware code is hidden via an XOR operation.

JPEG exploit could beat antivirus software

I suggest checking the new pre-release version.

Do you mean by this that the bug has already been fixed in the beta version? The changelog at the link certainly doesn’t indicate that.

If there is a more appropriate place to report bugs, please let me know.

The changelog certainly doesn’t cover all the small changes… so yes, it’s possible.

Yes, this is one of the issues that’s solved in the new build.

Thanks!
