I think it might be the cyberlink Rich Video Service Unknown publisher, I have enabled all other services except that one, and so far so good, but could it be the start up items? (listen to me! like I have a clue!!)

Just trying the system diagnostics now but that still wont load

So without the cyberlink programme everything is running properly now ?

Do you use the cyberlink programme ? (video editing suite)

Disable the vtoolbar updater as you do not need that one

What we will do is use windows to do a check disc. Could you follow the instructions here http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67612-check-disk-chkdsk.html use method 1

well, I went back to msconfig and enabled start up items too, have restarted, but still dark screen and no volume or internet, should I continue with your suggestion like this or return to no start up items? Or even ms config - normal start up?

Have done the checkdisk, it ran at restart but don’t know where report went? System seems ok except darker screen, no volume and still no connection

Run Msconfig again and tick normal startup, but deselect the Rich Video Service

still the same, and I don’t think the checkdisc ran properly cos it says it should take 20 mins or so and I don’t know what a ‘no GUI boot’ check is

When you try to connect to the net what error do you get ?

You should have seen this whilst chkdisc was running

tried again, check disc is now running … 11% complete :stuck_out_tongue:
can’t remember exact words but when I clicked troubleshooter it said something along the lines of fixing manager not enabled

still running … :o

If the drive is a mess it will take a while I am afraid

Once completed could you let me know how the net connection is please

Scan complete, where would the report go? Still dark screen, no volume, no connection (The diagnostics policy service is not running)

Reset MSconfig back to normal start up now enabling all services bar the Roxio one

Download and run this small programme https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/12354842/My%20Tools/ListChkdskResult.exe
After running the script a log called ListChkdskResult.txt will open inside Notepad and the file is saved on the user Desktop.
If you could attach that

For the network right click the icon in the tray and select Troubleshoot
Let me know the result please

still says the diagnostics policy is not running - it feels like there a load of stuff not switched back on

Reverse the steps you did initially
Enable all services and select normal startup

done that and rebooted home hub, this one is fine but still no connection so I cant download that link you sent

interestingly after restart the screen is brighter until I start to type my password

Is the laptop wireless switched on… Not sure whether it is a dedicated key or one of the F keys

yes, I had thought of that at least, :-[ it seems to be a load of ‘windows’ things that are switched off, I’ve been trying to reconnect and even tried windows update and I get things like service is not running. I’ve checked all the boxes on msconfig, I’ve tried reconnecting as though its a new connection but laptop not finding anything

gotta say though, internet, darkness and silence aside - its running sweet as a nut!

audio and direct internet connection references amd64 so my guess is it is something to do with that? Any ideas, please

this has just come up on the desk top - “windows has detected an IP address conflict”, would it be anything to do with the laptop trying to connect?

OMG it’s getting worse, everytime I leave it for more than 20 mins, it won’t wake up again, have to take the battery out to start again

Nothing we have done thus far should cause that

Download Windows Repair (all in one) from this site

Install the programme then run

Go to step 3 and allow it to run SFC

On the start repairs tab click start

Select the following items and tick restart system when finished

I will do it tomorrow, have to go to bed now, think you are the 4th emergency service, you are so amazing!

small problem with that - still can’t get online!
‘Windows security Centre can’t be started’ could it be something to do with that?
