C drive repair

Yesterday I ran scandisk for the first time in a long (several weeks) while (previous runs detected no problems) I was shocked when I got a screen stating that windows had shutdown my computer to prevent damage due to disk problems. It advised me to check for any new software or hardware that might be the problem. Now I did install a program by Ashampoo for cleaning the drive and registry, which I just uninstalled. Now my question is this, when I run scan disk again and I get the same message should I do a complete system recovery (HP Pavilion machine) or just ignore it. When I restart and choose “last know good configuration” my machine starts up fine. I guess I’m worried that a problem could spread like a cancer,’ is that possible, and what would you guys advise?

Hi,

If there is indeed a problem with your drive then a system recovery will most likely not help it, because system recovery is good only for software not hardware, I would recommend you contact HP they have excellent support and may be able to help you.

Regards,

Justin

Sometimes this is just a glitch and a reboot does the job, it could be new software (especially if this is working with the registry), but I think that this is just a throw away line by MS.

I would suggest that you also run ’ chkdsk c:\ /f ’ without the quotes, the /f switch is for fix any disk problems found. I think you can get away with chkdsk /f and that will check all drives.

Hello,

I also noticed recently as well that when running chkdsk during bootime creates a session3_initialization_failed blue screen error. It happens on all my HP machines even a new one I just bought a month ago. When I restart my PC, chkdsk attempts to scan my HD again, but after it finishes, I get the blue screen error again. It’s like an infinite loop. The only way I could boot Windows is by choosing “last know good configuration” just like how SCORPIONINBLUE did it. I did some research about the blue screen error and it seems like it is a CD-ROM hardware error to some.

…but nothing about chkdsk causing it.

Checking the Microsoft Website reveals:

…Task Manager reports the smss.exe running on my computers.

And searching Google for “session3_initialization_failed chkdsk” reveals no similar problems…

I’m as stumped as you are, SCORPIONINBLUE. I have no idea what can cause this. It might just be an HP related error as all of my machines are HP. I know some of my firends have HP computers, so I can ask them to try it out for me. But in the meantime, I would advise staying away from chkdsk if you have an HP computer. :-\

Yes, yes yes!! That is exactly the message I got also!! Oh, my God it’s good to know that I’m not alone with this problem!! My situation is exactly the same as yours! And I always have to go to 'last know good configuration" to get things going. Oh, you don’t know the relief I’m feeling at this moment! But you know what? I knew I would find good advice or comfort here in this forum. Whenever I’ve had a computer problem this is always the first place I turn. Thanks ‘K’ your post has alleviated the guilt I’ve been feeling all day, thinking that I did something to harm my machine. Everything functions fine, if I didn’t run scandisk I never would have even imagined that there was a problem. Thanks a million!!

I’m having problems getting my avast up and running. Think you might have any input for me?

But what is your problem?
Better if you start a NEW thread about it and not posting elsewhere.
