Call Filter - Need a way to block by area code

Since many SPAM callers originate from the same area code, a way to block using area code and wildcard would be appreciated. If I want to block everything from area code 321, I should be able to enter 321* in the custom number field. Most numbers come through this way, without a preceding 1 or other number.

I understand the need to make sure emergency calls can go out but the app should be smart enough to allow for 3 digits and a wildcard if the group is set for incoming only. The 4 digit rule can take effect if outgoing is also selected in the group.

Also, the filter logs currently show labels like “4 days ago” or “Monday” for when a call/sms was filtered. This gets confusing as the log grows. It just shows a bunch of days. It should show the actual date instead.

Hi,

it would actually not be that easy. Imagine you set up a group without outgoing calls, you enter 3 digits custom number, you go back into the group detail and suddenly the outgoing calls button is greyed out. The same would apply if you would set up a group with outgoing calls, the custom number dialog would suddenly stop accepting 3 digit numbers. I think that would be pretty confusing for most of the users.

Does it really say “Monday”? Hmm… We might try to take a look at it.

Hi Filip. I was thinking of the same steps you mentioned. I saw the outgoing button greyed out if there were three digit custom inbound numbers like you mentioned. I also thought of it not being greyed out. If a user clicked on it, a small popup window would appear that says, “You have 3 digit custom numbers defined. You must modify these to have at least 4 digits Or create a new group for outgoing calls.” The same for the other way around…when they go to enter a custom number, text can inform them that the number must be 4 digits since outbound calls are being filtered. Or, each group can only do one type of blocking, inbound or outbound. Those buttons could be radio buttons where you can only select one of the other. I don’t feel creating a separate group for outbound filtering would be any more confusing or challenging. It would certainly be worth the advantage of being able to block by area code. Most other call filters allow area codes with wildcards.

As far as the log goes, yea, mine looks like this…

Monday
Saturday
Thursday
Monday
Sunday
Thursday
Monday

Avast is sooooo close to having a call filter that performs just as good as the best ones on the market. There is just a few issues that need to be addressed and you got it.

Hi,

there are at least two problems with your solution:

a) we try to avoid informational dialogs as much as we can because we feel that if we show a dialog, it must be a really important one, otherwise it’s a sign of a bad design
b) users just don’t read, that’s what we thought and confirmed during the time the apps are live, so even though you would describe the facts there, they would still go to Google Play and post about it in the comments or here on the forum or in our support system, so fixing it using texts in any form would most probably not work

The log will be improved, I think we removed the week days completely.

Filip

Ok, so my first solution is no good. But, making each group either only outgoing or incoming with radio buttons wouldn’t require users to read pop-up dialogs. I think there must be a way to block area codes that will be satisfactory for all if we just think about it. Can you post a poll in this forum asking users if they would like the ability to do this? Does this forum allow those type of polls???

Thanks for improving the logs.

Hi Filip.

Another option would be to allow all 3 digit area codes except for the ones on the world emergency list.

Hi,

better list is here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emergency_telephone_number - and as you can see, there are even 4 digit numbers there and I’m actually concerned about the validity and completeness of this list. I really don’t want people not getting help in critical situation just because they set up AMS incorrectly :frowning:

We probably can do a poll, why not. You can create it I think (as a separate topic) and I can stick it for a few days and we will see about the results.

Filip

I certainly agree that we don’t wan’t people to not be able to get help. The best way I can think of at the moment would be to only allow one block (in or out) per group. To block outbound calls you would create a separate group which would be able to force a certain number of digits in the custom number. The Avast team might even be able to think of another way to do it.

I created the poll. I just hope there are enough users of this product that even use the Call Filter feature to vote. I think most people use it for the security/malware protection.
