Can Avast run on this?

I read the system requirements;

System Requirements
For a computer running Windows® 95/98/Me:
486 Processor, 32MB RAM and 50MB of free hard disk space.

I have a 150MHz Pentium Pro Processor with 64MB RAM I have been working on. I am curious if those requirements mean WITH the OS running, or aside from the OS.

On a more important note, if anyone knows what models of Compaq computers used this processor, and where I can find the manual for the system board? I want to OC this thing if possible. If I can OC this thing, I am certain it can handle Avast then, along with other programs. (I do know it can handle StarCraft!)

With the OS running, I mean, you don’t need 32Mb RAM free because avast will share the RAM with the other programs and the memory will swap to the virtual memory (pagefile.sys). Ok, if you have less than 32Mb free of RAM it will be difficult even to load avast.

Did you search the Compac website for your computer model and look for the specifications?

The minimums you see are related to the OS you are using and you don’t mention what OS you will be trying to run.

The settings you give for system requirements would mean that if you were going to run win 95,98,me then it would meet those minimums. If however you were contemplating win2k or xp then you would be barely within the minimum spec.

Please note: hardware configurations described below represent the minimum recommended system specification for that operating system.
So start adding things to it and the minimums become very different.

Minimums are a real pain, especially in win95,98,me where they really do suffer from a lack of resources and the OS gobbles up a lot of what you have, start adding additional applications, browser, firewall, anti-virus (a minimum to remain secure whilst on-line)and I think you start to get the idea that it will be like walking through treacle.

Your hard disk is likely to be thrashing about like a mad thing as the swapfile works overtime to compensate with a lack of RAM. Yes it will run but watching paint dry is likely to be quicker.

Hi Pirate1337

Minimums are with OS
This link covers a number of issues http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=27691.0

Presario 4100 series? e.g. 4122
You may get more info if you can read the m/board manufacturer and code off the PCB, and web-search that.

Try this to see if you can locate the model number

once you have the number you can enter it here and quite possibly d/l a maual

Responses…

Sweet, after days of looking, found the manuals for the system board and processor. I plan to OC it later. ;D

Also, the model of the computer is now unimportant, because I found the things I was really looking for! :o

OS is 98SE, so it should work, according to what you guys say.

Bios doesn’t like my XP or 2K CDs, so nix those. ???

Speaking of thrashing… I currently am having a blast listening to head crashes on a failing hard drive. I want to see how long it will last, so I am repeatedly running scandisk on it. Suprisingly, it is still working, but each scan finds more bad sectors. (Nobody better say anything about me possibly being stupid enough to put an OS on this. :P)

With the old bus speeds… the paging file will implode if that is the case. :-\

Awesome.

Looking for boards a Pentium Pro is used with is what did the trick. I tried that actually… I don’t even think they still have the manual for this.

Also, is a maual some sort of mystic tome? ;D

I think I covered everything…

Anyway, I wonder how the overclocking will go… I bet I’ll fry the board with my luck.

It is successfully overclocked. I will let it run for the next 24 hours. :stuck_out_tongue: If it survives, I can install the programs I want to. ::slight_smile: Ten percent performance increases are always awesome. ;D 150MHz to 166MHz!

Is this computer works with Internet ??? If not - you needn’t antivirus on this “machine”

Two things I have to say in response to this one…

1: The internet works ONCE per install…
2: “machine” is right… it is borderline a PC vs a doorstop.

A few more things have occured that may make Avast not happy when installed…

My comments on the situation…

 1. The internet is bad with my installations.
 2. I have to reinstall each time to connect.
 3. I have decided to install W2K.
 4. W2K install couldn’t find EULA.
 5. Desperation; I am currently installing XP as I am typing this.
 6. XP should connect to web.
 7. XP is not a fan of a 166MHz Processor and 64MB Ram.
 8. I wonder if this thing can even run something as baseline as that old Oregon Trail game.
 9. That paging file comment earlier… yeah… definitely gonna happen.
 10. Is lag in Minesweeper even POSSIBLE?

Re-install Avast! or Windows 98?

Did you install only Standard Shield?

If your PC is Pentium Pro 150, XP performance will be awful, if Pentium 150 (socket 7) it will be really awful, especially if your HD interface is slower than UDMA33. At a client’s request for rock-solid stability, I once installed XP Home on a Pentium 233MMX, 64MB, UDMA33 machine and all I need to say is, it’s a great printer server!

I’d say with 64MB RAM, XP will be slow even on 3GHz CPU. Printer server… could be, but interractive application would cause a lot of swapping.

Hi Igor

Exactly!

…but not much good for anything else.
