I can’t say what version I had installed, because every time I go near a backup copy, Avast moves it to the chest! It certainly wasn’t a very recent version, because I tried whatever was the current version on my last system upgrade (April 2011), and it did not work very well for me, so I went back to whichever version it was that I had been using previously.
Now I come to think of it, it’s not the first time Avast has flagged a bit of elderly software stored somewhere on my machine as malware, but previously it has been programs that I no longer use, so I have let it go.

If there is anything related to Avast with a yellow triangle then uninstall it (highlight, right click) and reboot.
Many thanks for that, Eddy. I definitely will upgrade, but the present panic is over: those wonderful folk at Avast seem to have already fixed the issue in the current vps 140312-1, and I’m now able to use Notepad2 again and carry on with what I was doing!
