I installed Avast but was wondering if I could set an option so it not not start automatically with rebooting the IMAC. I cannot find any setting.

such a setting does not make much sense. Antivirus should work mainly as a service on the background and provide permanent protection, even the on-demand scan needs a scanning daemon running. However, if you want to disable certain or all shields, it can be done in Avast preferences.
