Can not log on to Facebook

Since installing avast free version, I can no longer log in to Facebook. The message I get in IE and Firefox is :Cannot open the site you requested. I can log in on another computer that does not use Avast.

Hi, bkngbl, welcome to the forum.

FWIW I use Avast, Firefox, and have no trouble using Facebook.

Likely problem is the AV you had installed before Avast. Which one was it?
Also, what firewall do you use, and are there any other sites you are unable to open?

If your firewall dont no accept the webshield or other thing of Avast! you should allow them then tell us what Anti Virus you had before and how you uninstalled it.

Mr.Agent

I was using AVG before. I uninstalled it using the “Romove programs” in Windows control panel. I am using WinXP sp2. I don’t inderstand the comment about webshield.
Thanks for your help

Go to AVG website and run the AVG Removal Tool. Its would be sure if you upgrade your windows to the XP SP3 its would be more secure and what firewall do you use ? Did you allow the avast! shield via the firewall ? If no please do it.

Thank.

Mr.Agent

And Web Shield Issues

I did the AVG remover. I disabled Windows Defender. I set up webshield in my Firefox browser.
I still get the same message in Firefox and IE.

Address Not Found

Firefox can’t find the server at login.facebook.com.

Try typing in this URL instead of the one you’ve been using. It appears to not exist.

Thanks.
I can get to the login page. When I enter my email and PW, there’s a pause and then the page comes up with the message as above.

Do you know for sure your account is still active? Can you see it from a friends computer?
I have never seen the url you posted on my address bar when I’m on my facebook account. I wonder whether someone could have hacked your account, or whether you are being redirected.

I can access my account completely on my daughter’s computer which is on the the same home network as my computer. This is a real mystery as to why my computer can not get to the site no matter what I try. I thank you a ll for trying to get to the bottom of this problem

See if you can do it by pausing the webshield. If you can, you have to work through the FAQ’s posted above.
What firewall is it?

I would be surprised if it were the web shield, however, if it were then pausing the web shield wouldn’t work. All that pausing does is not to scan the content, but the traffic is still redirected through the web shield localhost proxy, so you would need to terminate the web shield to try that test.
