Can not set the Web Shield to Custom

It really drives me mad - I set some exception pages for the Web shield, but I can’t set it to Custom. It keeps resetting itself to Normal or High settings and checks even the pages that are on my exception list.
I don’t like it, since some of them doesn’t load correctly with the Web Shield running (I often get loads of rubbish plain text at the top of the page, or background doesn’t show up or the fonts are wrong…)
What can I do to force the Web shield to stay at the Custom setting once selected?

I’m using 4.6.691 Pro version under Win XP Pro with SP2.

Thank you

Try a repair of Avast. It may solve it.
How to do it is explained in many threads on this board.
Please use the search function to find them.

It should work :-[
Why don’t you try setting WebShield, closing the settings window, shutdown the WebShield provider, enable it again…

Thank you both for your time and for the prompt action. Unfortunately the advice by Tech didn’t work. I’ll try later the solution by Eddy an will let you know how it went.

Do the settings for the other resident providers get saved? (don’t check the Normal/High slider, but rather the real settings).

The position of the slider is not relevant. What matters is if your settings were saved or not. Can you also please post the pages, if they are public, so we can check them a correct possible errors in WebShield?

PS: do you correctly use wildcards? e.g.:
http://www.bad-page.com/myfolder/*

For the user it is… even if the settings were saved or saved, we want the slider at the correct position.
If not, why does the slider exist?

Simply because the slider does not consider adding a few excluded URLs to change the scanning sensitivity from HIGH to custom. If you change eg. on Web Scanning tab the option: Scan all files to “Scan selected type only”, the slider will move to custom. At all cases you are not loosing any functionality. The slider just reflects the settings and here we might say that it does not reflect all of them very nicely. But the slider position is not relevant to the program behavior, it is not used in any way while WebShield runs.

But I have this “slider issue” in my task list, but believe me or not, somehow I have assigned the priority to be: LOW. Sorry.

The subject says: Can not set the Web Shield to Custom.

The real question should be why are your trying to achieve this. If the reason is to add excluded URLs, then please add them or we can discuss why that fails. But knowing the fact that the position of the slider does not change how the program works, it’s hardly more than a waste of time to fight with this graceless beast.
