Can not update Avast 5

while trying to update avast 5 (current load 100816-2) receive error code can not connect to server last encountered error Cannot connect to download904.avast.com (209.62.112.18:80)

This is most commonly related to firewall blocking.

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

First, try to update the avast! program manually.
If the manual update completes successfully, the problem should be fixed and the next time there is an update available, the automatic update should work.
If you are unable to update avast! program manually, the best solution is to reinstall avast! completely (using the current version, available on our website).

David I am using windows firewall(vista). I do not see any parameters for avast.

This is on my wife’s machine and I do believe it was updating untill 8-16

Well the Vista firewall has outbound protection, but it is disabled by default. So unless you have enabled it that isn’t the cause. If it has been enabled I can’t really help as I don’t use Vista, so I don’t know anything about its firewall.

Did you try the manual update as suggested and if so what was the result ?

Hi DavidR i think the internet connection is the cause,when the load is so big on the connection a problem with avast update will happen"it happen to me a lot ::slight_smile: ::)"
so connect to the inter net and dont work on any thing while updating “dont download or surf”

Yes I tried several manual attempts, and tried turning the firewall off once. I am using Hughesnet as my provider are there any known problems with them.

Can you download any thing else,a video ,a program,…?“not avast related”
if the answer is no,so the problem is with your internet provider

Yes I can download other items. Hughesnet is a sattelite ISP and at times has special issues (it used to affect my browsing of Yahoo sports).

So even if you dont work a lot on downloading and surfing ,you cant download the update,hmm…
Can you try later may be it is a problem with your isp or with avast server.

Avast has not auto updated since 8/16 and I cannot force a manual update

So go to a friend"or your other pc"and download the offline file then update
