I use Avast! free anti-virus on the virtual machines I run on my laptop and I recently installed Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, and Windows ME in VMware Player. Is it possible to get an earlier version of Avast! free that would be compatible with the versions of Windows I mentioned? I like to keep all of my virtual machines free of viruses and so far all three of the operating systems I mentioned have internet connections but no protection.
Any help would be appreciated.

Avast! 4.7 looks like it will do just fine since it works with the Windows 9x series of operating systems. The only thing I don’t see mentioned in the system requirements is Windows NT 4.0 which I believe is different than the Windows 9x series or am I mistaken?

Oh thanks. I just found Avast 4.8 on Cnet and it looks like it will work for sure. I’m downloading the Avast setup.exe and I’ll give it a try in the OSs I mentioned.

But, then we have a problem. Avast 4.8 does work with Win9X&ME but only if those operating systems are not running under VMWare. If they are, Avast 4.8 will crash the virtual machine. I reported this to Avast at the forums here but got no results.

well no suprise… 4.8 is running on overtime so they want spend time fixing anything on it… no morer program updates for 4.8…
