Cannot add to url blocking

Hi,

Loving the new Web Shield, but I have a problem with the URL blocking.
I have added about 42 URLs, but cannot add any more.
If I click the Add button, I can type a new URL in, but it does not save the new addition.
If I click OK to close the window, then go back in, the new one has gone.

If I delete as existing one, I can then add another one, but no more.

Is there some kind of limit, or have I a found a glitch???

Cheers
Mikeyb

Yes there is a limit. The webshield is not ment as some sort of ‘spam’ blocker.

Hint:
To block a entire site, you can use wildcards so there is no need to add each subsite

The problem is caused by the fact that the settings are persisted in a Jet database, and the field has a limit of total 255 characters.

You may try to swtch to the XML storage which has much higher limit (I think it’s something like 1000 characters).
The caveat is that switching the storage type means loss of all custom configuration settings entered so far. :-\

Hi, thanks for your replies.

Eddy:
I would have thought the whole idea of the webshield would be to block access to suspicious websites.
And I’ve been using the * wildcard on all my entries, just using www.something.com*

Vlk:
Ah, yes, I can see the problem that would cause (knows all about databases) but using one text field seems a bit strange for such a setting.
How do I cahange it to the XML storage, don’t think I have any custom settings apart from the new URL blocking.

You can use the hosts file to block websites.
url=http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm[/url]

This is how you switch to the XML storage: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=222.msg970#msg970

BTW URL Blocking is just an added value of the WebShield provider - its main purpose is to scan for viruses, of course

We’ll likely have a much more comprehensive web content filter in the future.

Thanks
Vlk

Like Outpost Firewall has a blocking sites list?
