Cannot connect to server error.

For some reason, my avast update thing won’t connect to the server. It keeps giving me the “Error: Cannot connect to server” after a summary page, yet it didn’t install anything. I’m new to the forum, so I don’t know much about the common practices here. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum

If you are using a firewall, make sure avast.setup has access.

I don’t have my firewalls on right now and it still won’t let me through.

Please, post the last 50-100 files of avast log file:

Are you using a proxy? Did you configurate it into avast settings?
Program settings > Update (Connections) > Proxy

Yeah, I kept switching the setting in the Update (Connections) settings and nothing would work. I think that was the setting I left off on.

I do remember changing my settings to try and get BitTorrent to work. Something about IP addresses. Avast still worked even after that. It just all of a sudden would not connect on me and kept giving me errors ~.~. I hate computers.

Make sure your browser is not set to “Work Offline” (this option is generally in the File menu).
If it doesn’t help, try switching from “Auto-detect” to “No proxy” (I’m assuming you’re not connecting to the Internet via proxy).
You can run proxycfg -d in a DOS window to make your computer connect direct, without proxy. You can run proxycfg -h for help.

It says “Direct access ”. I suppose that means I can connect without a proxy. Do you think uninstalling and reinstalling would work?

It’s a good tentative. Please, follow:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again.
  6. Boot.

Yeah, so it didn’t work. I uninstalled, reinstalled, forgot to right down my license key for which I bought a 3 year subscription for, and it still will not update. This is getting ridiculous. Any suggestions?

Please check avast! settings, that proxy is disabled there, because lines

SYNCER: Type: SOCKS proxy (rfc1928,1929)
SYNCER: Auth: no authentication

shows that avast! is configured to use SOCKS proxy access.

Then please post last ~50 lines of your setup.log.

Thanks.

That’s what it is after I reinstalled it. My connections say I’m auto-detecting the connection.

I don't have my firewalls on right now and it still won't let me through.

Can I ask you to explain this comment a little further please?

Which Firewall?

How is made to be “not on right now”?

I’m not sure about a continuous firewall. I know that’s what you were talking about, but I don’t know where I would configure it or how. I have ZoneAlarm and Windows Defender, they have a firewall option, and both have options to be turned off and I have them off now in case that’s the problem with avast. Does that answer your question? If it doesn’t, I don’t know how to explain it better.

I keep getting this error:

Information about current update:
Last encountered error: Cannot connect to download203.avast.com (75.126.120.197:80).

Total time: 4:36

This is your firewall only…

Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.

Don’t need rights to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)

…oh. It was the program control in ZoneAlarm that would not let Avast update. …:-[
