Cannot import .avastconfig file

I exported an .avastconfig in April 2021, using v20.10.2442 (Build 20.10.5824.0).
Now, with a freshly installed v21.8.2487 (Build 21.8.6586.0) I cannot import that, neither within the UI nor by opening the .avastconfig file directly.

I always get

btw what is the file attachment system of this “old school” board software good for if I can’t embed pictures in the same post of what the picture is attached to and I have to use an external pic host to have it embedded?

Double-complain™ - :heavy_check_mark:

You can only import the aswconfig file from within the newly installed/updated version.

The problem may be that with an old program version (about a year old) of the aswconfig not being compatible with any new settings in the 21.8.xxxx version

The file name convention being free_av_2021-9-23.avastconfig (just exported mine).

See my attached image of how the attach file/images works.

Okay, that’s unfortunate.

The file name convention is the same.

I know how to attach a file, but I cannot embed it into the post if it’s an image.

And btw, another complain, the eMail to notify about your reply seemed totally wrong in the first place, it pointed me to
https://forum.avast.com/?topic=61991.0#new as I clicked the link in the eMail which is https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=304934.new;topicseen#new
Kinda wonky.

That’s a problem with the forum. Selecting the link in your email a second time when that happens usually solves the problem and sends you to the correct post.

  1. That has always been the way it is done, you export it from the program so you have to import from the program. My guess this is more of a security thing as any outside function could leave you vulnerable.

  2. The file name convention really isn’t the issue, that is why the program version is the actual name, if you leave it too long program settings can change.

  3. There shouldn’t be a need to embed it within the post, certainly not in the instance here.
Also there is a way to do that also, as you obviously found, but it requires you to give it a web location of the image and you can’t give it a local computer location.

  1. well, some backwards compatibility would be appreciated, we’re in 2021.
  2. I just mentioned it as a reply.
  3. “local”? From the server-of-this-forum’s point of view? Other board’s software suites have this feature for many years, just attach an image and embed it into the post with one click.
  1. Unfortunately with SMF forum software, it hasn’t been this way in over 17 years of using Avast and frequenting the forums. There aren’t many bells and whistles with SMF either

I wouldn’t name a helpful and user friendly feature “bells and whistles”. It’s nothing about hype, what kiddos like on TikTok or what the heck ever. It’s just a feature for a better readability of a post; when a pic is a cropped screenshot of a popup message to have it inside the post where it belongs in context.
Like it has been done for a good amount of years from serious users all over the world, outside of the SMF bubble.

Hi, I totally disagree, it’s much better to have an attachment and only those who want to see it click on it, than post all stuff inline and clutter up a thread and force load it on users. However, this discussion is OT here.

I call it self-responsibility to know what to post and what not.
Yeah offtopic, but being tangent to, and so contextual.
I’m out, reactionary die-hard-ism’ish the thing and so I stop wasting my time for a we-will-never-fix-stubborn-bs response.
After +25 years of learning what is usability and what is not I can decide so.

You’re entitled to your opinions.

Hello,

Can we go back to the original problem? Unable to restore a backup file of settings with version 21.8.2487.

I’ll take a new computer.
I’m installing Avast 21.8.2487.
I configure my settings.
I’m saving my settings.
I’m rebooting the computer.
I’m trying to restore my settings… But I have the same error message.

I found the solution

  • doube click on the file avastconfig
  • uncheck the “password settings” box
  • clic next and not error message…

I can confirm that function.

Thank you and also thank you for being a solution-bringer, not being a die-hard selfish person without the tendency to help.
