Another miserable problem. I had some corruption issues with avast 4.8 after a reboot. I could not get it to work again. Tried the Repair feature and that did not help either so I decided to uninstall it and download a new copy and install it.
Since then I have had nothing but 3 days of misery and I hope some help can be found here.
I have attached a copy of the failed install log.
The download goes fine. The setup seems to go fine until the end when I get another failure and the attached log file.
A couple of times I actually got to reboot but once back into windows, avast never started and and could not be repaired.
System is Windows XP Home and has been running avast without too many problems for the last couiple of years.
After initially uninstalling avast, I started to have problems with my system with PFN_LIST.CORRUPT issues. I ran Memtest v3.4 through 20 passes over about 18 hours and no Memory Errors were found. After that, I ran 'Driver Verifier" against all drivers loaded on my system and received no BSOD’s, sop I am pretty sure I have no corrupted drivers running.
I am not sure if avast could corrupt a PFN. Maybe one oif the techs can comment on this and also have a look at the attached pdf log.
a) I have completely removed all prior installation of avast (and any other av software run in the past)
b) I downloaded the avast uninstall program and completed uninstall
c) I tried to reinstall avast but got the same problem as before.
d) To rule out other system issues, I also tried installing other software which installed without any problems until I tried to instal some other av software and the system would not permit it. I have been having some registry issues since I ran into my problem with avast 4.8 hanging my system and these issues seem only to get worse as I try and work thru the problems.
e) I have now pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I will do a complete reinstallation of XP.
f) I don’t know what happened because I have not changed/added anything to my system and I now am having rights issues from this corrupt registry and far too many hours spent trying to figure things out.
g) I am taking out my sledge hammer and getting ready for the good old “Format c:”
Quick question before you bring out the sledgehammer…
Did you install XP SP3?
I’ve read that SP3 causes more problems than it fixes (a lot like Vista SP1). I had to restore my Vista installation after Avast failed to initialize after installation. Sounds a lot like the same type of problem you’re having. You might try to roll back to SP2 if you can. If that doesn’t work, then whack it good! ;D
dan1701a, maybe I’m lucky, but I’m sure not the only one…
I’m using XP SP3 in two computers, no problems…
I’m using Vista SP1 in a notebook, no problems…
I suppose there is always the possibility that I have a different issue than others - no two computers are alike. All I know is that I had OK luck with XP SP3, and terrible luck with Vista SP1 (twice). One of those times, I think SP1 killed my Avast! installation.
System restore disks are my best friend.
Could’ve been an issue with my display drivers, too - I’m going to update them tonight and see if that helps at all.
