Cannot install!

I installed Avast Free from a file called avg_free_stb_en_2014_4335_free.exe, dated Mar 11, 2014 on a nerighbor’s computer. It hung when updating. So I killed it and used Revo Uninstaller to uninstall it.

Then I downloaded a fresh copy from CNET and trioed to install it.

I got this error message in a window entitled “Process Trust”:

“Fatal error: current avast! installer is not trusted by avast! Defense module. Try to launch the installer again.”

The log was empty.

I tried again and got the same result.

I used Process Explorer to see if any Avast! processes were running. There were none.

How do I recover from this?

Thank you.

Clarification request:

[ol]- Don’t see how an avast program can be gotten from an avg stub installer.

  • CNET Download.com is notorious for malware-laden installers. Thus avast installer could be infested with the likes of Conduit toolbar and worse.
  • avast! Defense module appears to be running yet Process Explorer shows no avast processes.[/ol]

Issue is avast! is not running? Then use a second computer to download the full offline installer and the aswclear.exe file to fully remove the old corrupt version in Safe Mode, transfer these two files over to the one missing avast!, run aswclear.exe in Safe Mode admin account (only), and then reboot and run the full installer:
http://www.itechtics.com/download-avast-2014-offline-installers-direct-download-links/
http://www.avast.com/en-us/uninstall-utility

Check file properties of the avast! itechtics file, it should be 9.0.2018.392, before you run it.

Better now?

[EDIT:] Use this link to fully remove any other a/v programs you may now have running or have run in the past: http://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB11#artTitle You cannot run two or more antivirus programs at the same time.

  1. Oops! I copied the wrong file name. Sorry.
  2. Following the links from avast.com takes you to CNET!
  3. Avast is not running.

I downloaded the clean install and the remover and will visit my neighbor tomorrow.

Thanks for the detailed response.

True.

You’re welcome.

CNET? Ugh! That’s why I searched a little deeper and found the full installer for you.

Be sure to ask your neighbor what other a/v have been on their system in the past; run the full uninstallers in the third (last) link before you install avast on their system; reboot after running each tool, if more than one needs to be run. You’ll need a copy of each uninstaller to transfer over if more than one. McAfee may require more than one full run to completely remove. Reboot after each run of the McAfee tool.

Best to be prepared, eh?

Thanks. Yours and CNETs were identical.
