Cannot print from Microsoft Starter when Avast is Safezone is enabled?

I have a problem that just started recently, I cannot print Microsoft Starter Word or Excel documents. Everything has printed fine until recently EXCEPT that in the past, before I could print from Word or Excel, I had to print something from my e-mail etc. , this has been going on for a while and now can’t print from them at all??? I can print from other applications such as e-mail etc. .I have read that there may be an Avast conflict causing this, when I change my Avast to “unprotected”, there seems to be no difference. Can anyone tell me if there is a problem such as this and maybe what a resolution may be? I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer several times and no change. I get a message that the printer is “unavailable”. I am using the free version of Avast and the latest version. Thanks

Free does not have Safezone. Try a repair Control Panel>Uninstall>double click “avast”>click “repair”>reboot

Thanks Para-Noid. I gave that a try, afraid I got the same results of “printer not available”. Really a mystery. If you have any more ideas, please let me know.

Does the printer show up in your device manager? This can be accessed via the control panel.

Yes, see it under device manager as officejet 6500 E709a printer. Did an “update driver” and came back as latest driver is already installed. As I mentioned, the printer works fine with other applications such e-mail etc. thanks

GOT IT!!! Went to the “programs and features” in control panel, then to “turn windows features on or off” under “control panel home” on left of screen and then to “Print and document services” and checked all 4 options. Worked for me. BTW, found it on the “Microsoft Community” , under “Office” website. A post that was dated September 20, 2012. Again, thanks for the help.

Glad to see you got it fixed. 8)

Well, I guess I spoke a little premature even though I was able to immediately print 5 or so times from Excel and Word. Went to bed thinking the darn thing was fixed. Upon trying it first thing this morning, found that it was broke again. Go figure!!! About ready to throw the whole computer in the pond. I have run out of ideas and Microsoft wants a hundred bucks just to fix a known problem, shame on them for not supporting their products.
