Cannot renew free license again

Somehow I thought this issue was fixed.
Following these directions: https://support.avast.com/en-us/article/Activate-Free-Antivirus/ does not work. On step three, I have no button to select the free version.

I have 12 days left now and am totally sick of this annual baloney. Here is the thread from last time: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=288500.0 which was only 8 months ago. No annual subscription anymore? I was mistaken about 8 months, that was my Win 7 box. This is Win 10, with the same problem

I am not willing to uninstall / install multiple times trying to fix this. I am about ready to find another solution.

Any suggestions?

I follow the actions in the link you gave, however there are times when selecting the (greyed out looking) Select button doesn’t remove that window and go to the My Subscriptions screen.

I click the Select the button and X the window closed (top right) if it doesn’t return to the My Subscriptions screen.

That hasn’t failed me in the years that this method has been used. Because you only do it once a year you often don’t remember what you did last time.

Personally this is an unnecessary pain in the backside when as Avast has mentioned its free why would you need to renew it. Since it supposedly doesn’t require renewal - other than to promote the paid service it achieves bugger all other than hack of users.

The problem is I don’t get the grey select button shown in item # 3, only the green upgrade button.

I only boot, or re-boot every 2 weeks or so. Is that what triggers the upgrade prompt?

A screenshot of what you see might be helpful, as in the past the Avast Free Antivirus ‘Select’ button has been so faint as to be almost invisible (but it was there) and centred below the line X’ed out options. As I mentioned "I click the Select the button and X the window closed (top right) if it doesn’t return to the My Subscriptions screen.

On this laptop I don’t reboot very often either, but after I complete the registration I do reboot the system.

The Renew/upgrade prompt normally happens 12 days before the expiry date and that has for me been accurate, so isn’t triggered the prompt. So I have no idea why you being hassled after 8 months, mine usually falls due in February and that has been fairly consistent.

What doesn’t help was the removal of the very helpful Expiry date from the Avast UI, the reason why this happened ‘according to Avast’ was since it was free it doesn’t expire, so no need to display it, what a lot of cr4p that is !
I believe it is still in the avast setting/data somewhere, how else would they hassle you when re-registration is ‘required’, or we could be being hassled after 8 months (or perhaps it really isn’t there ???

It may be worth a read through your old topic link that you gave again (I know I just did) and reply to one of the replies by r@vast, « Reply #10 or « Reply #19.

Here is a screen of what I see. I forgot to mention this is on my win 10 box.

That is certainly incomplete, what avast version and build number are you using ?

Have you tried an in place Avast Repair
If not I would try an Avast Repair, from the UI > Menu > General > Troubleshooting > Repair App. I would do a system restart after to allow any changes to apply.

What happens if you click in the area where the Select button should be ?

Hi, most probably related to Riley’s system/setup, else we would see many complaints on the forum.

@Riley7: Make sure Avast isn’t blocked by a firewall (or other security related apps) and try again.

To me it looks like a sales pitch nothing more.
It states you’re protected by the free version so just use the X in the top right and close the popup.

No firewall except the one included with Windows. I do have browser security extensions. The same problem happens on both Win 10 and Win 7.

Hi, is maybe any hardware firewall involved…!?

Yes, but I just bypassed my router and rebooted. No change.

Nothing happens if I click where the button should be. Version 22.1.2504 (build 22.1.6921.710) Have not tried a repair yet.

You mentioned replying to r@vast in the old thread. Could I PM instead?

Beats me, sorry.

You could (personally I wouldn’t) but he wouldn’t have the direct access to the information in that topic and your new one. Plus this also opens it to others in or viewing the topic/s.

I would first try the avast repair before any further action.

You could also update to the latest 22.2.xxx version and see if this is the same.

More than 12 days have passed since I got the only update notice.

I didn’t try further to fix this, and it is still licensed.

Thanks to all who replied!

You’re welcome.

NP and thanks for the feedback.
