Cannot renew free license

I have 10 days left before Avast Free expires. I have tried to renew various ways including following these instructions: https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/Activate-Free-Antivirus/ .

I then get an upsell screen to buy the program, I x out. Next comes a free trial and I X out again. Then the Avast main screen appears still reading I have 10 days left.

This is really annoying, any suggestions? I am running the current Avast version on Win 7 Pro x64. I seem to remember getting a free license by email in the past. Is that still possible?

Things like this make people think about switching to another antivirus. I thought Avast had quit doing this.

Did you click the ‘apparently’ greyed out button on the left, to continue with the current protection (or words to that effect) ?

That is what I did on my last renewal, from the next screen I X’ed that out and I continued with Avast Free with the new period.

Yes, I clicked that grey button. Then I get “thanks for activating Avast free”, then a continue with upgrade button. I click it and get now choose your plan (2 paid options). I X out and get try free for 60 days. I X out of that and back to main screen reminding me of 10 days left. …

Just now I think it worked. I either closed or minimized the black UI and there was a small white screen showing with the grey select button. I clicked and it seemed to work. In all my attempts, that screen had never shown before. Over 2 hours of my life wasted.

There is no way to view the days left on the license as in earlier versions?

Thanks

Clicking that Upgrade is where things go pear shaped (and I feel is damn misleading) taking you down the path of Upgrading to a paid product.

Unfortunately avast have taken the view that with the free product, you don’t really need to know when to renew it, so don’t need to have a renewal date. Well why the hell do we get the annual dance to ‘essentially renew’ your registration.

My thoughts on that are, it is an opportunity to offer the paid version of Avast Premium, etc. I have no problem with that, offer it by all means, but this bloody dance without a clear ‘No Thanks’ option and not have to go through screens with no CLEAR way out isn’t good.

My Avast Free (build 21.5.6354.680, UI 1.0.646) has decided my subscription has expired.

There is a link on the UI home page to reactivate. That takes me to a page that offers (on the left) continuing with free, and (on the right) going for a paid option. I click the option to stay with Free and I get a further screen offering me a free trial of Premium. There is a “No thanks” at the bottom. I click that and go back to the UI home page. Guess what: my subscription has (still) expired.

Unless I’m missing something, there currently seems to be no way of reactivating the Free subscription without accepting an unwanted trial of an upgrade. I really don’t want to do that. (I’ve tried “X” out the various pages, rather than following the links, but that makes no difference. Rebooting doesn’t do it either)

As I understand it, even without the reactivation I’m protected. But I get a nag screen every morning when the PC starts up telling me to reactivate; I’d as soon do without that!

Hi,

You should be able to renew the free version without any trial of Avast Premium Security.
Could you please provide a screenshot of Menu > My Subscriptions (do not include any personal information)

Thank you for responding. Does this help? Putting that code into the “activation” field doesn’t reactivate the subscription.

This is very odd. Today when I started the machine Avast reported that it has an up-to-date subscription and no longer put up a nag screen. It is as if it needed to sleep over-night before responding to my attempts yesterday to reactivate the subscription. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I had tried rebooting but to no effect so there seems to have been some sort of time factor involved.

Alternatively, if this was remote action triggered by r@avast: thank you.

Hi,

Thank you for the update. There was no remote action from my side.

I’m having the same issue. The weird thing is that back in the day you registered Avast! for a year and then had to renew it, even if it was free. I only installed Avast! on it like a month ago, and now it’s saying my license has expired. When I go through the thing to select the free version, it says “thank you for choosing the free version”, offers me a free trial of premium which I decline, and … you’d think it would be solved, but the next day I get the message that it has expired. And I go through the motions again. And again the next day.

Hi,

With the latest Avast Free version, after the first 30 days, it will expire and give you the option to upgrade to Premium or continue with Free. After this, it will be valid for 1 year.
In Avast Free, could you please go to Menu> My Subscriptions> Next to “Avast Free AntiVirus” click on “UPGRADE NOW” > Under “Select your security level” window click on “SELECT” Avast Free Antivirus > Under “Thank you for choosing Avast Free Antivirus” window, click on “No, thanks”

I’ve been receiving lots of complaints about Avast’s attempt to make using the free version exceedingly difficult.
Many of them wind up with a paid version and all that causes is animosity.
Why not simply offer a choice at renewal time, stay with free or upgrade to enhance protection?

Given what has been previously said by Avast that the Free version doesn’t need to be re-registered/renewed as its free. The same reasoning was used for why the time left in the registration/subscription was removed from the UI.

This whole annual bun fight to try and renew (what is free) is a bloody mess, from the greyed out button that many feel isn’t a button (as apparent in many topics) and incorrectly click the active button (Avast Premium).

I have no problem with Avast offering the Premium, which I feel is the reason for this whole mess. But lets do it in a clear way and having made their selection that should be it done, one click, not the multiple windows/hoops mess there is now.

Here are some older screenshots I captured, but it is still the same sort of hoops users have to jump through.
Note, these are the ones you see if you have correctly navigated through the free 'registration@ (which we supposedly don’t need), there are others if you accidentally click the wrong option.

+1

Big Problem if YOU did pay for 3 yars and then want to go back to Free it is A heck of a work
You have to uninstall and delet alot of files and then reinstall free and hope you dident miss anything from Premium and then it is working agen

And if you forget whata fuck the install password vas your fucked Trow the money in the sea … Totaly imposibel to recover password from AVAST

It’s your password not Avast’s It’s up to you to remember it. If Avast knew the password, it wouldn’t be your password. To go from paid to free, just uninstall the paid version and you’ll be given an option to stay with the free version.

I’m suffering this problem as well.

I click to reactivate, and I get two options. When I click the free version, it immediately gives me an option to “continue with upgrade,” it doesn’t renew Avast, and it gives me no option to reactivate the free license.

Use the X top Right corner to close the image two you posted (duplicated and attached below), and it should conclude the free activation.

This is what I did, Reply #1 and #3 above.

But that bloody loyalty window should have a gracious way out ‘No Thank you’ button, etc. Not this bloody window with no gracious way out.

Thank you, going through the “My Subscriptions” area was the only method that actually worked! Going through the exact same prompts, selecting exactly the same options, but from the automatic “your licence has expired”-popup or the banner in the Avast interface itself didn’t do anything, it kept saying expired, hence the frustration.

Hi,

Our developers will look into this issue (No, Thank you button).
It is there for the other window (without a discount offer).
