I have a strange issue with avast at the moment. I have been running this on my computer(s) for a while now and haven’t had any issues.
Unfortunately I have one now I cannot save files to my desktop with firefox, when I do I get an error saying that I do not have permission to do this (I have an administrators account on this computer). I know that it is not a permissions issue because I can save files using IE.
I found out that Avast is causing this because when I disable the protections the problem disappears. I am having trouble figuring out which one is actually interfering, my first guess was the Filesystem Protection, but even with off and others on the problem comes back.
I tried to narrow it down to a specific shield but I was unable too. At first I thought it was the file system shield as that made the most sense to me. So I disabled that and the problem seemed to go away. Then I disabled all except the file system shield and I still had the problem, which was good. But then I disabled the file system shield and enabled a few others and the issue came back so that made me think that it is not a specific shield that is causing it.
Also I do not receive any popups from avast when this happens.
Have you checked/changed your IE setting for something like ‘Start programs and unsafe files’ (don’t know the exact wording in English) in Internet Zone to disable?
If this choice is disabled in IE you will not be able to download anything in Firefox.
I just tried it with Firefox 11.
But since you mentioned that disabling Avast fixed your problem this is probably a long shot.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I am about 99% sure that this is an avast issue unfortunately. I hardly use IE so unless that setting is enabled by default (I doubt it is as this problem just started recently) I don’t think it is the issue.
