I had upgraded my version of Avast to 5.0.677.0 a few days ago, and I got a notification that the program was unable to update the virus definitions. On trying to manually upgrade, I got an error message “Cannot connect ot server”. I an using Windows Xp Home on a netbook, with Ashampoo firewall. I have given full access in Ashampoo to all the exec programs in the Avast folder in the Programs folder, including ashUpd.exe. I have reinstalled Avast, and get the same error. My update settings are that I am permanently connected to the internet, and I have tried both Direct Connection and Autodetect on the proxy settings.
I removed the Avast entries from Ashampoo, and tried to update Avast. Ashampoo informed me that Avast was trying to contact the internet when I opened Avast, and I set a rule allowing full access. However, when I tried to update Avast, I got no messages from Ashampoo, and the update failed again. I turned off Ashampoo, and still no luck.
The problem seems to be restricted to this version 5 of Avast, as I had no problems with 4.8—in fact I have 4.8 running just fine on another machine with Ashampoo.
I can confirm that a compleet uninstall the ashampoo fire wall free will help. I just did it.
After the uninstal in the windows xp save mode all the update possibilities are working allright.
Now i have to find a good en free firewall which will work good with avast antivirus.
We had several threads here on the forum that Asyn and I were involved in regarding Ashampoo FW causing problems with Avast. Once this FW was uninstalled, Avast worked fine for ALL the users.
